Colors That Flatter YOUR Color

We’re all for trying out dramatic new hair colors or experimenting within your own shade. But when you make a hair color change, you need to adjust the colors of your wardrobe to go with it. We asked Jennifer Romolini, Shine Fashion and Beauty Editor, to talk us through the color rules.

When celebrities take on a new color— hello, Ashlee Simpson— you’ll notice that they start wearing different colors that best flatter their new shade. Suddenly, the jewel tones that looked so great on Ash when she was flame-haired don’t have the same impact now that she's back to her rocker black tresses. So how do you know what colors to go for? There are some simple guidelines you can follow:

• Brunettes, which, by the way, need the least amount of upkeep because dark hair reflects light and hides breakage, first have to consider which type of brunette they are.

A “warm” brunette with olive skin looks great in mochas and mauves and neutrals. But a dark brunette with pale skin (like me) should stay away from those muted shades and work the contrasts instead. We look good in deep blue, purple, dark pink, icy pastels and bright whites.

Makeup-wise Jen likes smokey eyes with lots of mascara paired with light lips.

• Red is the in color of the moment (thank you, Christina Hendricks) but it's a much more difficult shade to pull off. Red looks best on people with pale or pinkish skin. It’s also a higher-maintenance shade as the color can fade if you don’t use the right products.

Red heads can never go wrong with jewel tones—greens, purples, sapphire blues are extremely flattering. The one color they should always avoid is. . . bright red, which can make red hair look orange in comparison.

When it comes to makeup, go for subtlety: light pink cheeks and lips. As Jen says, let your hair be the focus.

• Most of the time when women are looking for a color change, they're looking to go blonde or blonder (I'm not sure if that's true, but it feels true.) If you were born a blonde, says Jen, even if your hair got darker over the years, chances are you have the right skin tone to pull it off now. Of course there are many shades of blonde to consider.

If you’re going golden blonde (Jen’s shade) and your skin has golden undertones, you’ll look great in reds, golden colors and warm neutrals.

If you’re aiming for a whiter, ash blonde (Gwyneth Paltrow, Grace Kelly) and your complexion tends to have cool undertones, silvers, grays, powder blues are your most flattering.

One thing all blondes have in common— they look fantastic with a pair of bright red lips.

Some really great advice in this episode. Thanks, Jen! Be sure to check out Shine and all the cool posts on the Fashion & Beauty page.

I agree, I'm a brunette with natural dark brown hair and I love the way blues/purples look on me!

Hmmm... Natural golden blonde here. We do NOT all look good in bright red lips. That is a complete fallacy.

What is an icy pastel? I'm dark brunette, pale skin, green eyes. I'm thinking of buying a yellow sweater for winter. Is yellow an icy pastel? I think mint green might be an icy pastel - but I don't like it.

I am a brunette with green eyes too-went the blonde route and looked really washed out. Went back to the brunette, but my hair has alot of reddish highlights too. Love the jewel colors. Alot of people have said that I look best in blues or deep purples. Anyway, happy my hair is Dark again!!! Great for covering the grays too.

yellow might be able to pass as a pastel, depending on how light it is.

interesting tips. For the most part we all kind of know when a color doesnt seem to fit. However there are ways to determine your skin tone so that you can look great in fabulous colors. There are basically three type of skin tone, warm, neutral and cool.

Cool Skin Tone - Consider rich, true colors. These would include black, navy, red, shocking pink, rich raspberries, deep emerald greens, royal blue, plums or pure black. Additionally wear icy tones instead of pastels for a lighter color. Cool skin tones should avoid beige, orange and gold.

Warm Skin Tone- Consider earth colors either crisp or muted. Normally those with a warm skin tone look great in sage greens, gold, mochas, and bronzes. For a softer color try peach, apricot yellow.

Neutral Skin Tone - luckily for you, all colors will look good however, as indicated above most neutral skin tones will sway one way or another, so while a warm color may look great on you a cool color may look fabulous.

Me, I am lucky and have a neutral skin tone and look good in most colors. However I do avoid orange which makes me think I tend toward the warm side. I have med. brown hair (I think) and have tried various hair colors which all seem to fit my complexion.

There are tests to determine your skin tone and you can read about it on my post on Shine "deteriming your skin tone" - here is the link http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/beauty/tips-to-determine-you-skin-tone-warm-neutral-or-cool-451307/

or just stop by a deparment store cosmetic counter and a sales person there can help you indentify your skin tone and which colors will look best on you.

My mom's a redhead, and looks beautiful in red and pink, which she only discovered rather later after a life of wearing blue and green. Try everything- you never know what'll look good!
