Face and Body Detox Dos and Don'ts

A great time to start a detox plan is when your body’s adjusting to a change of season. So in other words. . . right now! Celebrities like Hilary Swank and Anne Hathaway have talked about their favorite programs but there are lots of options out there. We asked Dr. Jeffrey Morrison who specializes in nutrition and heads up The Morrison Center here in New York City, to guide us through the detoxification dos and don'ts.

I've tried lots of different detox regimens from strict organic veggie diets to juice cleanses. (BTW, as Dr. Morrison notes, you should always check with your doctor before trying any sort of detox regimen.) They definitely make me feel healthier and afterward I’m less likely to reach for the pizza. At least for a little while.

Most people think of detoxing as a means to weight loss and that’s often one of the results of a good program. But I’ve come to realize it’s not just your body that needs cleansing, it’s also your face. It sounds obvious now that I say it, but it’s really not something I've ever focused on. Honestly, if I took my makeup off at the end of the day, I figured I'd done enough.

So recently I've tried to make skin detoxing a priority by drinking more water (I’m terrible at that, I admit), cleansing daily and gently exfoliating to improve circulation. Dr. Morrison pointed out that when you do these simple things your eyes look brighter and your complexion gets a kind of natural rosy glow. Who wouldn’t want that?

One of the products I’ve started using daily is Olay Purifying Mud Lathering Cleanser. The mud properties feel like they’re drawing out impurities and oils but the texture is silky not crumbly. And I love the way it smells. But you should try it for yourself and tell me what YOU think. Be one of the first people to email me at watchthethread@yahoo.com and I’ll send you some purifying mud for free!

Oh, and here’s one more product I feel the need to tell you about. After you’re done detoxifying and you want to feel luxurious, moisturize your skin with Olay Ribbons Body Wash with Body Butter.  You only need to use a small amount and its great!

Used Oil of Olay's purifying mud cleanser tonight for the first time. Loved the smell, the way it lathered on my face, and the clean feel of a make-up free face! It was like using a mask but without the time consuming part of having to wait for it to dry and then rinse. Let the detox begin! ;)

WARNING-Be VERY careful with detoxing yourself. I first started detoxing in junior year of high school (3 years ago) in trying to cleanse my self of toxins and improve my physical body (externally and internally) and also to help me become more spiritual (devout yogi back then). However, I got an eating disorder not too long after that.

What most don't realize is that, after you cleanse yourself (especially through fasting or master cleanse) for a few days, when you start eating again, you will get a crazy uncontrollable urge to just eat as much as you can. Note, I have been very thin and healthy my whole life (never had any signs of eating disorder and never had food issues in anyway).

I was shocked after my first binge since 1. Never had it before 2.Felt so guilty for putting so much "toxic" things into my body and 3. Felt like a failure for unable to control myself (I have always been a major self discipline freak).

Detoxing changed my view in food. Before, I never thought about food, just ate when I am hungry and stopped when I feel full. When I started detoxing, I started to see food as toxic substances. I would feel guilty every time I eat anything I would consider bad. Many times, I would fast to help my body heal itself (after I think I have eaten bad). I would start to starve myself and when I started eating, I would be like a ravenous beast and would just devour everything in sight. Of course, after ward, I would feel bad and either fast or take oxy powder (detox pills) to rid myself off toxins. I basically became an anorexic bulimic/health freak.

Just giving you all a warning. Be careful and don't get too caught up with detoxing. Just make sure to complement/substitute vegies and fruits to your diet and make sure to drink plenty of water. Remember that your internal body is self cleansing and your internal self knows how to maintains its homeostasis. Unless you have been ordered to detox by your physician or Naturopathic Doctor or you are under the vigilance watch/guidance of a doctor or nutritionist . I truly think that detoxing would do more harm than good in most circumstances since it does disturb your body's normal function and does takes it out of balance (remember, your body is not helpless, it can clean itself, you just need to eat better and drink more water and the body will take care of the rest).

Body cleansing and detoxification have been referred to as an elaborate hoax used by con artists to cure nonexistent illnesses. Most doctors contend that the 'toxins' in question do not even exist.[16][17] In response, alternative medicine proponents frequently cite heavy metals or pesticides as the source of toxification, however no evidence exists that detoxification approaches have a measurable effect on these or any other chemical levels. Medical experts state that body cleansing is unnecessary as the human body is naturally capable of maintaining itself, with several organs dedicated to cleansing the blood and gut.[18]

Professor Alan Boobis OBE, Toxicologist, Division of Medicine, Imperial College London states that "The body’s own detoxification systems are remarkably sophisticated and versatile. They have to be, as the natural environment that we evolved in is hostile. It is remarkable that people are prepared to risk seriously disrupting these systems with unproven ‘detox’ diets, which could well do more harm than good."[11]

Highly restrictive detox diets such as Water fasting or the Master Cleanse are not the safest form of weight loss. These diets, if done improperly or for too long, may result in nutrient deficiencies. Of particular concern is lack of protein, which may result in wasting of muscle tissue, due to insufficient amino acids for repair. With less lean muscle tissue, the body's metabolic needs decrease, which hampers weight loss efforts unless calories are lessened further in the diet.[19]

Finally, while many testimonial and anecdotal accounts exist of health improvements following a "detox", these are more likely attributable to the placebo effect; where people actually believe that they are doing something good and healthy. Yet, there is a severe lack of quantitative data. Some changes recommended in certain "detox" lifestyles are also found in mainstream medical advice (such as consuming a diet high in fruits and vegetables). These changes can often produce beneficial effects in and of themselves, and it is accordingly difficult to separate these effects from those caused by the more controversial detoxification recommendations.

I have used Olay Products since I was 29 years old, I am now 50. They have so many new products. Olay is good if you are in your 20's, 30's or any age.
