Good Trends Gone Bad: Is your favorite celeb a fashion victim or fashion icon?

The high fashion runway is often home to outrageous styles (hello, harem pants). More often than not, it takes a sophisticated knowledge of fashion or a professional stylist to know how to make these avant-garde looks work in real life. Just watch how these big runway trends can easily go bad!

Harem Pants
Some people might say this trend NEVER looks good. I found a pair at Urban Outfitters with a high waist and slim cut that don't look half bad if you pair them with a tight top, peg the bottom of the pants and wear the highest heels possible.
But there are plenty of disastrous harem pants out there like the pair I sampled from Elizabeth and James which made me look as if I had a diaper on. (I did not, I swear.)

Strong Shoulders
The 80’s was a big influence on the runway this year. Big shoulders are back and when they're done right (i.e. subtly, in muted colors) I kind of love them. I found a nice lightly padded silk jersey from Zara. But I also found examples that gave me shoulders the size of watermelons. Not ok.

Bunny Ears
Hair accessories had a real resurgence this year. "Gossip Girl" reminded us that embellished headbands can be inexpensive and fun. And then… designers had to go and take it to the next level. Bunny ears actually came down the runway at Louis Vuitton in Paris! Madonna wore them. The Olsen Twins wore a Maison Martin Margiela version.

Crazy Shoes
Shoes-as-art has also been a big trend lately. I found a pair of sexy purple platforms with an ribbon flourish that in my opinion could double as a sculpture. Gorgeous. Then there's taking the concept to the extreme. Christian Dior made a pair of purple pythons. . . with seven-inch heels! Other designers made shoes with hourglass heels, heels shaped like little guns or no heels at all!

Torn Up Tights
I love tights with intense patterns and colors. Betsey Johnson has some great ones out now and celebrities love to wear them on the red carpet. But even something as basic as tights can go haywire.
Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus and 90210's Shenea Grimes wore some that were literally ripped to shreds with gaping holes. It looked as if they'd been through a street brawl. Unattractive and unflattering.

So remember, we are all for experimenting and expressing yourselves but wear these particular trends with caution! Thanks for watching, you can find more at thethread.yahoo.com and we’ll be back soon from our Planet Hollywood studio in Times Square with a brand new episode.

The harem pants look like you're wearing a saggy diaper, lol! But the shoulder pads? It didn't look good in the eighties, and it doesn't look good now. What women wants shoulders like a linebacker?

Those aren't "trends" - they're just recycled junk from the 80's.

Amen, Mims - having worn them the first time, I feel free NOT to wear them now! Besides, did you ever notice how ANGRY the clothes were in the 80's? Go into Bebe to see what I mean.

I can't stand one of those trends. Can't wait till they are gone. Why do they bring back such awful stuff any way?
