The Thread Celebrates Boho Chic

Welcome to the second episode of The Thread, Shine’s brand new show about celebrity style, fashion tricks and where to get trends for less. This week we’re obsessed with two things: Amanda Seyfried’s boho chic tops in Mamma Mia and this summer’s unexpected staple, the maxi dress.

Take a look.

I love being comfortable in my clothes, so boho-chic is right up my alley. It use to be that dressing “Bohemian” simply meant wearing something loose-fitting and hippie-ish. But the peasant tops we found are stylish and sophisticated and cut to show off your body, not hide it. And don’t get me started on these maxi-dresses, try one on and you’ll never want to take it off. This is not your mother’s muumuu!

To recap our first segment above, Amanda Seyfried’s top was a one-of-a-kind made by the films costume designer Ann Roth. But the Old Navy embroidered top I wear is so similar and sells for 24.50 that you’d hardly tell the difference. The bright red top (available at Lord & Taylor) is a little more expensive at 88.00, but perfect for a summer evening. You can’t buy the one I made, but you can make your own. Come on, give it a go!

You can argue for days over how much credit Lauren Conrad is due for bringing back the maxi-dress, but you have to admit she certainly helped make them popular and she sure can wear them well. We’ve got a closet full of great maxi dresses in every price point.

Check out the video below.

LC has her own line of clothes now, and her designs are on the higher end of what you might pay for a maxi-dress. The “Zoe” and “Christine” styles are both priced just over 200.00 through Lauren’s site. At half the price, we found Gypsy 05 and their organic collection of maxi-dresses for only 100.00 (a ton of celebrities have this dress - - I love mine too.) And there’s really no excuse to at least give a maxi-dress a try, especially when you can get the very adorable pink one we showed from Target for only 22.00 - - that’s just a ridiculous price for great fashion. Love it.

Thanks for checking out The Thread. We'll be back again next week to tell you how to get Natasha Bedingfield’s corset belt form her music video “Pocket Full of Sunshine” and a look at the stars embracing menswear-inspired vests. In the meantime, if there's anything you see that you'd like us to help you find, post some comments below or send me an email to sar_bernard@yahoo.com

Hooray for those with nimble fingers. Embroidery might just be your personal signature 'thing'. However, if you have smooth hair and smooth skin, embroidery might just be too visually busy for you. We might be seeing the embroidery instead of experiencing YOU. If you have curly or wavy hair, though, and a freckle or two, that embroidery just might be a part of a harmonious visual whole.

Be careful where you place that embroidery. Put it where you want eyes to go. If you are less than excited about your tummy or hips/thighs keep the embroidery chest high and above. So remember, you have to love your bum if you put embroidery close by.

Choose embroidery patterns that reflect some interesting shape in your facial features. If you have straight horizontal eyebrows, you might choose straight horizontal lines in the embroidery pattern. If your face and features are dominantly curved, choose curved embroidery patterns. Then the 'rhythm' of the embroidery is reminiscent of the rhythm of your face design. You'll end up loving what you have created, and others will love seeing you in it.

    Maxi-dress: Things to Think About.

You have to love your shoulders and have b-cup or smaller boobs in order to wear a strapless maxi-dress. Larger boobs tend to sag (not a pretty sight.) The v-neck black maxi worn in the video is perfect for anyone with a large bosom. If you don't like sleeveless clothes, have your favorite alterations person sew in sheer gauze or netting sleeves. You see your skin through the sheerness, but not any arm flags.

Be careful that the maxi dress follows your natural silhouette.

    - If you are a rectangle (your rib cage is close to an almost non existent waist,) choose a rectangle maxi.

    - If your hips/thighs are wider than your shoulders, choose a slightly flared maxi.

Also, remember to show off any of your 'skinny bits'. If you are wider than you would like to be all over, then have your maxi a few inches shorter so we can see your smaller-than ankles and feet. Wear eye catching shoes. And remember to walk with ATTITUDE.

I love maxi-dresses and I have several I brought from Brazil. This style is not new there. Actually, I bought them at a Spring sale back in March!

I have a nice halter style maxi that i bought at H&M two years ago. I've not seen the style 'take off', and have never worn it. I am going to NYC this weekend, and am contemplating taking it, but is it appropriate for just a casual night out? I feel it's too dressy for day, and i'm not sure what shoes to wear with it. I'll be walking alot, and on the subway, and my ol' comfort shoes are jcrew flip flops. are these appropriate??

Even a "B" cup is too big for a strapless maxi, unless you are about 16. They flatten you! Even just a little braided cord from the cleavage area around the neck will make a difference.

Singled Out: flip-flops are not a good combination with walking a lot, a long dress and the subway. How about a comfortable slide with a 2"heel, or gladiator-type sandals? You also might want a short-sleeved cropped bolero-type crochet top to throw over the dress, if it is sleeveless. August in NYC can be hot and humid, but air conditioning can freeze you.

wouldn't get caught wearing all that ugly clothing - where is good taste been ? imagine flip flop, big print, strapless etc... only 2% of the population can get away with - for the rest of us we look cheap, unkept, boring, tasteless. That doesn't include the glorified bad hair day. Please ladies come back to your senses .... go for some classy outfit and don't follow bad taste. Be your own fashionista !

p.s. classy means if you cannot wear it for 5 years, it has no fashion value. Great Designers are 5 years ahead of street wear if not more. Deja vue is boring.
