Top Six Tips To Avoid Summer Hair Disasters

We get tons of tips every week, but a recent e-mail from Dr. Craig Ziering, a hair restoration specialist, caught my eye! Here are Dr. Ziering's top six ways to avoid a summer hair disaster:

Drink Plenty of Water
- Among the many benefits of drinking water, it is also nature's safest and best moisturizer for skin and hair.
Curtail the Cocktails - Before soaking up the sun with a summer cocktail, remember that alcohol dries out skin and hair.  It's just one of many good reasons to avoid overindulging.
Keep Things Loose - Pull hair back in a loose ponytail using soft hair ties.  Avoid metal clips and tight rubber bands which can put stress on hair and cause breakage, especially when hair is wet.

See our tips: Creating natural curls: Pro tips for using your curling iron to create casual, come-hither waves.

Apply Protective Sunscreen to Hair
- UVA and UVB rays can damage hair, leading to split ends, breakage and loss of a healthy shine.  Also, sunburn to the scalp harms hair follicles and can actually result in an embarrassing summer bald spot. *Dr. Ziering suggests using Phytoplage High Protection Sun Spray.
Use Leave-In Conditioner or Soak Hair with Tap Water - Doing this before swimming prevents chlorine and sea salt from harming the cuticle, leading to breakage and split ends.
Use a Wide-Toothed Comb for Wet Hair - Wet hair is especially fragile and can easily break or tear.  A wide-toothed comb will reduce breakage - just toss one into the beach bag and be set for the summer.

I use Aussie Hair Insurance in the summer when I'm outside. My daughter likes to play in the sprinklers and slip-n-slide so I like to put a lot of the conditioning spray in my hair before I go out there. Works great and it's like 4 bucks a pop.
