Sleep apnea disorders do more than give bed partners sleepless nights. Recent studies show that sleep apnea in teens affects their social lives, but the apnea treatments make men's sex lives better. WebMD says that there are two types of sleep apnea, obstructive and central. Each center around blockages in the airway that interrupt sleep patterns. It's not unusual for sufferers to wake up gasping for air, a scary disorder for the entire family.
Is sleep apnea affecting your teen?
The first study, published by the University of Arizona, says that teens with sleep apnea have a greater chance of having behavioral problems, including hyperactivity and attention deficit disorders. Teens who don't get good sleep have a difficult time adjusting to different social situations. This landmark study included 263 children and took five years to complete. The study's findings is scheduled for presentation at the Associated Professional Sleep Society in Boston where it will be discussed further.
Sleep apnea treatments could improve men's sex lives
A study of sleep apnea treatments gave surprising results to male participants. Young men suffering with sleep apnea found that treatments with CPAP devices reversed impotence and corrected some erectile issues. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 90 percent of the 18 million sleep apnea sufferers aren't aware they have the disorder. Uninterrupted sleep helps with arousal, gives longer erections and helps the reproductive system work properly.
The study by Walter Reed Military Medical Center evaluated 92 men who used the CPAP machines for several months. Over time, sexual function was restored and sleep improved. A CPAP machines is expensive, costing apnea sufferers several hundred dollars.
