5 Signs You Have Bad-Fitting Jeans

A flattering pair of jeans is a wardrobe staple that every woman seeks. Unfortunately, shopping for said amazing denim can be compared to the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. (This pair is too loose in the butt, this pair is too tight in the legs, and this pair is almost perfect-if I didn't have to pay to get them hemmed!) One tip that we learned from our days working at American Eagle is that you should always try on more than one pair of the same size, same style jean. Denim stretches, and if the pair that you grabbed has been tried on by a few women before you, they'll fit differently than a pair that was just pulled off the warehouse truck. With the expert help from New York-based wardrobe stylist Shatonia Amee, here are five signs that a pair of jeans is not for you:

    1. There's bunching, wrinkles, or sagging in the crotch area. "You shouldn't have excess material in your crotch," Shatonia says. "Your jeans should be able to come all the way up and lie flat in that area. If not, your jeans may be too big, or your inseam may be too long." The solution? A lower-rise jean. 2. Your jeans are pulling and creasing in the crotch. "This means your jeans are too tight," Shatonia says. "You may want to try a jean with more stretch. Don't be afraid to go up in size, either - remember, your main goal is comfort!" Related: Style Solutions for Curvy Women

    3. There's a large gap in the back of your jeans. "If you can fit your fist in the back of your jeans, but they fit fine everywhere else, you need to opt for a lower-rise jean," says Shatonia. "Try a mid-rise; if there's still a little space, go for a low-rise. When changing rises, make sure the jeans fit comfortably, and be sure your underwear is not visible. Sit down in them to make sure you aren't revealing too much. If a low-rise is too revealing but there's just a little space in the mid-rise, you can always wear a belt or have them altered." 4. Your jeans are creating a "muffin-top." "There are a few reasons this may be happening," Shatonia says. "One reason could be that your jeans are too tight. Again, don't be afraid to go up in size - it's only a number! You want to be comfortable and look good. Another reason could be that you need a higher rise - your jeans should lie flat on your hips and waistline. When a pair of jeans is too tight or low, they can create that unwanted spillage, or muffin-top, on anyone, regardless of size." Related: 13 Foods That Beat Bloat

    5. Your jeans are either hitting the top of your ankle or they're dragging, even when you're in heels. "The length of your leans is a big factor in fit," Shatonia says. "If your jeans only come to the top of your ankle, opt for a longer jean. Some designers indicate length in numbers, but some use S (short/petite), R (regular, for women of average height), or L (long, for woman who are over 5'6). Another problem occurs if your jeans have a lot of bunching at the bottom and are dragging on the ground. If this is the case, you need to opt for a petite style. If this is your issue, I suggest shopping at department stores; not many boutiques offer petite sizes, while most major department stores have a whole department for petite women." As a senior woman, I want jeans that come to my proper waistline, also know as granny jeans. I do not like jeans that don't cover my bellybutton and just cover my pubic bones. Even on thinner women, they just don't look flattering, and on plump gals.....yuk.

Too funny! Yahoo does discuss the most important news
Remember ladies that when you ask THAT important man if your jeans make you look fat, be prepared for: "No honey, The jeans are lovely,
It's your fat ass that makes you look fat"!!!

As great as this signs are they just are easier said than done. Average pants are too long but petite pants are too short, low rise or mid rise I always have extra room in my crotch, even going down a size. If I go down enough sized to get rid of the extra room I get a muffin top, no matter the rise.

So thanks for the tips, but until they make different shaped jeans, I'm stuck with some of the bad-fitting jean.

....larger than 10 inch gap betweeen hips and waste? no wonder your jeans dont fit right.
some guys like big butts, some dont, rather see a little belly button anyway,

hey remember when you could wear bells that covered your feet and you did not have to wear shoes?

Here is my challenge...I have hips...I am not built like a 12 year old boy! I cannot wear Levi's and a few other brands because they do not account for hips...they are cut way to straight in this area. I am not fat (size 8) and I have healthy curves, but I am stuck with "mom jeans" because they are the only ones that fit hips.

You don't have to be plus size to be curvy.

Thank goodness high waisted pants are back
but hate flare legs. Wonder where you can buy
them in a tapered thin leg style.

TRUE RELIGION, 1-2% Spandex for stretch, true to size, a bit pricy, but well worth it, buy the dark wash Joey or Super T, dress them up with a nice pair or shoes/boots blouse/sweater, guarantee, individuals who know designers will for sure look you down, don't matter if you are a 26 or 31, this is how they run, simply invest in a pair or 2 that will make you feel good when in public, trust me, people know and look when anyone wears TRUE RELIGION.

Who didn't already know these rules? I was hoping for something new! I will say that the so called 'long' for 5'6" is so incorrect. Anyone under 5'8" would be swimming in long length jeans. I'm close to 5'10" and they are usually the perfect length for me yet occasinally even too long for me. Depends on the brand, but since the 'med' are too short I'll have them hemmed if I have to. Buying the right or perfect pair of jeans is harder than finding the right man, the right bra, the right home, the right job, friends, etc. the list could go on forever!

One last comment. Try on several pair of the same size in case someone else tried them on before you? You think you've found the perfect pair but after wearing them for 5 minutes they stretch out and no longer fit like you thought they would. I just don't think that's good advice.

i wish they would create a pair of jeans that accomadte my larger stomach and small hips, no butt..if they fit at the top they sag in the butt and visavera..i always look like i got a load..or i in my daughters jeans..

My butt is weird and my legs are skinny. Even in high school I had a "mom butt". It makes no difference what kind of jeans I put on. My butt automatically turns them into "mom jeans".

I didn't need this article to tell me that. And now on top of it I feel even more heavy looking at that slim-shaped woman having "trouble" getting into her pants. Thanks!

when are women going to wake up and complain,we are not build like men,or these anorixic models.
All designers should be put on an island and left there, with thier anorixic mannaquins. Whatever happened to young women(20-40yrs) and womens(40&older) clothing. All you see is clothing for 14yrs.olds. No wonder they have eating disorders. You would have to - to fit into anything they put out in the maket today. Designers are copying the wrong era(the 60's) when "twiggy" was so fashionable, yeah, and the flower children proclaimed love and peace, what a mess that was. I won't even go into color . Just stand in a store and look around-black-black-and more black. JUNK

these tips are not helpful for people like me who have slightly musculer legs with a very tiny waist and hips. i do wear very low rise jeans and the waist is always wayyy to big compared to the snugness in the legs i always try to buy 00 when i can but a lot of places dont go that low 0 is too loose in the waist.
