Naomi Campbell Swears in as Michelle Obama

Naomi Campbell has made many a transformation—supermodel, TV host, phone-throwing hellion, billionaire arm candy—but here’s one we never expected: Naomi Campbell, First Lady of the United States.

In this month’s issue of W, the spread, entitled “Naomi Campbell: The First Lady of Fashion” shot by Willy Vanderperre, the fiery supermodel channels glacially cool, buttoned-up elegance in an array of classic suits, carefully-lacquered bouffants and gleaming accessories.

According to the stylist behind the shoot, Edward Enninful, the inspiration was a direct nod to Obama, echoing a recent diplomatic mission she took to Ghana. “It’s a tribute to a modern day First Lady on a state trip, evoking the kind of timeless style that could have existed in the 1940s, 60s, or even today,” Enninful said.

While Naomi’s FLOTUS skews a bit more like Carla Bruni-Sarkozy—former first Lady of France and fellow supermodel who became infamous for her pink suits and pillbox hats during her husband’s reign—her portrayal comes off much more elegantly than Tyra Banks’s downright glitzy take on the First Lady, in the 2008 issue of Harper's Bazaar.

No word yet from the White House on how Mrs. Obama feels about her photo shoot—but one thing's for sure—both the model and the muse really know how to wear red.
