YOUR FRIENDS' ACTIVITY

Fashion questions to ask yourself before leaving the house

Deciding to wear a questionable, wrinkled outfit from your closet says a lot about you. Those statements range from, "Sorry, I woke up late" to "I have no fashion sense. Is the 80s?" As a small business owner in the beauty industry, I can say that what you wear does matter, from the interview to the running of a successful business. If a stranger peeked in your closet what would they find out about you? Make the best possible impression! Before you step out of the house, ask yourself these fashion questions.

Is my skirt the appropriate length for the activity? This pass/fail question trips up a lot of women. Heading to the boardroom? Your skirt's hem should fall two inches above the knee to two inches below the knee. Short skirts belong on casual dates, not usually a work appointment. Super long skirts can make you look frumpy and sloppy. I love a long skirt, but it's also more of a casual garment. Wear a professional skirt at the right length.

Do my undergarments fit me properly? Don't fight the fluffiness! If your bra size is truly a 40D don't try to squeeze in a 36D. That's four inches of body weight that will hang out somewhere. It's better to have smooth body lines than ultra-tight underwear that makes you look fat. Wear the right underwear size!

Peek-a-boo clothing isn't professional. Before you leave the house, take the time to look at yourself in the mirror. Make sure that skirt slit isn't too high and that your button-up blouse doesn't show your bra. Everything should be covered. I once saw a lady walking to the bus stop with the back of her dress tucked in her pantyhose. The ultimate picture of humiliation!

I find the best system for looking appropriately fashionable is to plan my wardrobe the night before. That way, I'm not frantically pairing tops and bottoms that may not work. Always do a mirror check (front and back) and don't rely on the "Honey, do I look okay?" check. Men never answer that question honestly!
