10 Drugstore Shampoos You Shouldn't Buy (Even if they're on Sale)

If there's one hair care secret I'd like everyone to know it's this: you don't have to spend a lot of money on shampoo to have healthy hair. True, there are great salon and high-end shampoos out there, like any of these that are more than worth their price. But, for most of us, we can get along just fine using a quality drugstore shampoo.

Please note however that I said a quality drugstore shampoo. Because plenty of them just aren't good enough for your hair. Take, for example, the shampoos below. TotalBeauty.com readers tried them and found they left their hair dirty, dry or greasy -- ugh! Peruse the products below, and toss any coupons you may have for them, they're totally not worth it.

No. 10: Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Smooth Vitality Shampoo, $8.33
TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 5.8 (out of 10)
Why: Most readers weren't impressed by this. "I don't think this shampoo and conditioner did anything out of the ordinary for my hair," one reader says. Another reader says it gave her "the weirdest breakouts on my upper arms."

No. 9: Suave Professionals Radiant Brunette Shampoo, $3.48
    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 5.8
Why: Most readers did not find that this enhanced their hair color. Instead it "left my hair rather tangled" and one reader says it actually "stripped away the color!" Others complain that this left them with "straw-like [and] dull" hair. One reader says, "I had colored my hair [and] it went a little too dark. I went to a salon … this is what they used to strip my hair of the color. LOL!"

    No. 8: Sunsilk Anti-Caida (Anti-Fall) Shampoo, $4.59
    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 5.6
Why: The verdict: "This stuff dried my hair out and made my color run." Other readers agree, saying even though "I love the Sunsilk brand … this dried my hair out." The final word: "BAD."

No. 7: TIGI Bed Head Self Absorbed Shampoo, $10.50
    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 5.5
Why: Readers feel a bit "blah" about this shampoo. "[Hair] wasn't stripped, but it wasn't very soft or shiny," readers say. While most readers had a so-so experience, one reader says, "my hair [was] so dry and tangle-y that my fingers got stuck in it when I tried to rinse the shampoo out." One reader laments, "Now I have 1 liter of this sitting around. It wasn't completely terrible but I don't use it."

No. 6: John Frieda Radiant Red Color Captivating Shampoo, $5.49
    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 5.5
Why: This was a double-whammy disappointment, readers say. One complaint: "[It] made my soft, silky hair rough and tangled … unmanageable." But the biggest problem: "it did not seem to preserve my color at all," readers say. One reader was so sad that "all it did was stain my fingernails and towels red."

No. 5: TIGI Bed Head Moisture Maniac Shampoo, $10.50
    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 5.4
Why: While readers do concede that this "smells good," they still can't endorse it. Why? "After using it my hair is rough and hard to brush," one reader says. Readers generally agree that this shampoo is "not nearly as moisturizing as its name leads you to believe."

No. 4: Burt's Bees Rosemary Mint Shampoo Bar, $5.99
    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 5.1
Why: While this may work for short hair, readers with long hair say, "you'll do what I did and give up in the shower the first time." One reader says, "it was pretty difficult to get enough lather to completely get my hair clean, and I ended up in the shower for way longer than I wanted to be."

No. 3: TreSemme ColorThrive Brunette Shampoo, $3.99
    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 5
Why: Our readers' major complaint with this was its lack of cleaning power. "I have fine, oily hair and must shampoo daily. With this product, I find myself wanting to wash my hair twice a day," one reader says. Another agrees, saying "my hair doesn't feel as clean after I rinse." Other annoyances: "the smell isn't that great" and "three times after I had used it, my scalp was all itchy," one reader says, adding "I'm not [usually] allergic to any shampoo."

    No. 2: TreSemme Vitamin B12 & Gelatin Anti-Breakage Shampoo, $6.99
    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 4.9
Why: This left readers perplexed: "You'd think that a product that's supposed to inhibit breakage would help moisturize hair, but this really didn't at all," one says. She adds, "This actually seemed to dry my hair out even more." Other readers didn't like that "it left my hair feeling waxy (from the gelatin in it) and dry."

No. 1: Samy Smooth Shampoo, $5.99
    TotalBeauty.com average reader rating: 4.3
Why: Smooth? Not so much, readers say. Instead, "it completely left my hair feeling heavy and dry," one reader says. Another adds, "It doesn't smooth, and it leaves hair funky feeling and dry." Fine, oily haired readers didn't like it either. "Made my fine hair greasy," and "made my hair limp and unmanageable, and it always felt dirty," readers say.

I use #6, the John Frieda Radiant Red shampoo and conditioner and it works really well. It makes my hair soft and silky, and my haircolor is not fading anywhere near as fast. Keep in mind, nothing except a color depositing product will keep the red as new as the day you did it. And the reader who had stained fingers and towels, probably didnt wash all the hair dye out first. This absolutely doesn't dye anything red. I half expected red bubbles the first time, but it goes in and comes out clear. And you don't need much at all to get great results

Haha, the number 2 "worst" shampoo (the tresemme anti-breakage) is what I have right now...and I actually REALLY like it! It's kind of hard to make lists like these because everyone's hair is different.

It mostly depends on what type of hair you have. :P

I also used to be addicted to the fragrance of TIGIs Bed Head Self Absorbed.... it smells like fresh oranges in the shower!
And it did leave most of my client's manes soft and manageable. But it got so expensive to use all the time, unless you were able to get a once-or-twice a year deal on the Liter sizes of Shampoo & Conditioner.

Most shampoos in salons also left my hands very dry feeling. When your hands are in the bowl constantly washing and rinsing, that can happen often. So I would have to use much lotion in the salon, (as well as the sanitizers when handling cashier duties! Whole other ballgame there!)

I hate all Sami products,Aussie, and it's true Pantene products can be very bad for your hair. I love the new L'Oreal non sulfate shampoos and conditioners. They are cheaper that other brands out there are work better. I've tried more expensive non-sulfate products and they are just weird. I could see how people could easily get turned off to them . They don't later as well and the conditioner seems to do very little. I don't know how they did it but L'Oreal got it just right. My hair has never been healthier, shiner, and keep color better. I love their 10 minute color as well. I think Revlon makes one but it's very drying. Again L'Oreal is amazing. Easy to use ,great color and it lasts! I know I sound biased and I'm not usually but, I feel something finally works and works really well.I hate wasting money on products that just fall short. I have so many bottles of wasted products sitting around It's sickening to waste money on false promises from these companies. I happy to have finally found something that is worth the money.

Hmm I like Pantene ProV nature fusion. I would have to agree it isn't much different though from regualar Pantene. I agree with most of the rest. Gosh it is soo hard to find good shampoo and conditioner.

I switched to Loreal, Ever Pure, sulfate-free. It doesn't strip your hair like other hair products that contain chemicals. My hair is no longer dry and is much more shiny.

I only use Pantene conditioners, the only conditioner that makes my hair silky and shiny.

how wonderful, this is based on comments made by just snybody. How about a list based on whats actually in the shampoo and the science behind making them. Throw in a little info about the benefits it has on your hair, scalp, smell, etc.. That will be a list worth reading, not this shallow hear say bullsh...

I have tried the Sauve Radient Brunette shampoo and conditioner. I actually really liked both of these products. Both left my hair softer and with a shine to it. But what may work for me may not for for others. =]

I'm going to have to disagree that the patiene pro-v nature fusion does nothing for your hair. It smells great and it leaves me hair feeling soft and smooth

You mean use a high quality shampoo - your article is about low quality shampoo.
    • Kimmi  •  2 years 4 months ago
Tigi bed head is a really good shampoo. If you buy it at the grocery store though the company does not stand by it. it could be old counterfit or even tampered with. I always get my products from the salon and never have any issues as stated in this article
    • Mimi  •  2 years 4 months ago
Um, TIGI is not a drugstore brand of shampoo!!!! I am a licensed cosmetologist so I know what's up. It is a professional salon brand that should NOT be sold in drugstores, only in salons. When it IS sold in drugstores or other places, it's quality is not guaranteed. It is not only illegal, but could be made in the back of a van!!!!! They should really do their research (like reading the back of the bottle) before they actually put it up on the sign in page..........

I used to buy Bedhead however i noticed my scalp would be irritated and within 1 day have build up
what works for me is organic or sulfate free shampoo it leaves my hair clean and add shine

My reply is for katie who expressed her feelings about bed head straighting stuff and other stuff. Katie, you should talk to a hair professional when purchasing professional products. If these professionals just SOLD it to you then they're not doing their job. Someone should be at your beck and call to talk to you, get to know your hair, touch your hair, look at your scalp, ask you what products you use now, explain to you anything you need to know about your hair leaving you with products you know about about and know will work for you and your hair. If where you bought your salon products is not doing this for you then you need to wave good-bye and find a salon that is willing to do thier job. There is NOTHING better than knowing your hair and getting professional products that you can work with and make your hair look magnificant, inturn, making you feel freakin awesome! advise; if it made your hair greasy, it was too much for your hair if your hair is med-oily. Since it is a top of the line product, try Tigi, Bed Head, some like it hot, heat and humidity resistant serum. Only use a few drops, rub it between your hands before you blowdry and before you straighten. good luck. but c ur stylist.

What some woman might not know, is that professional hair care products that use to be sold in salons, and are now sold in a regular drug store, some makers have changed the product contents to make them cheaper..Some products are not even that product, I went to beauty school and learned all about this..Companies get ahold of others product bottles and sell them to places like Cvs.etc. and all thats in there is some cheap product.Sometimes its not even a company, its some joe smoe who has gotten ahold of bottles and is just tryin to make a buck, people have actually been arrested for running companies like this..You are best off getting your products from a salon..Its 99% gaurateed, if you dont like it they will replace it...

Hello. Not that most people would read the comments but several of these shampoos have salon purposes and when not purchased in a salon with a licensed cosmetologist that understands the chemical use of these: no wonder the results.

ANYTHING with BAR in the title, or rosemary mint is a hair oil build-up stripper. It is what you would use for cradle cap. In children and in elderly folks that have their hair washed and set once a week.
It is not meant for the hair, as much as for the skin of the scalp.
So pubic course hair is not an issue for roller sets, the kind of style that a roller set is intended.

TIGI salon product. Salon purpose of this combo shampoo and conditioner is that they are PH balanced for BLOND duel processed hair. If uses alone, or for other types of hair, this is a normal and purposed reaction, as, it will build up on the hair, and cause healthy hair to feel snarled.

Buy shampoo from shampoo trained salon people and stop pouring your money down the drain.
