13 Things Your Hairstylist Won't Tell You

    Interviews by Maureen Mackey

Hairstylists share their tips for understanding their jobs and how to get the most out of your time in the swivel chair.

    1. I'm a beautician, not a magician. I can give you Gisele Bündchen's haircut, but I can't give you her face.

    2. Come at least five minutes early. If you're running late, please call ahead. Show me some basic respect. This is a business, not fun and games.

    3. Don't ask me to "squeeze" you in when I'm already booked. I'd be taking time and effort away from other clients. You wouldn't like being treated that way.

    4. Hairdresser school does not teach about counter transference, projection, negative reinforcement, or personality disorders. If you're looking for a therapist, all I have is a tail comb and an opinion.

    5. Some women think that if they keep their hair all one length the way it was in high school, everyone will think they're still in high school. Guess what? You're not. As you get older, you need to soften the lines around your face. Layers are the magic remedy.

    6. Bodies and hair change as hormones change. If your hair is dry, listless, or brittle, or if it's not holding your color or style the way it used to, see a doctor. If your hair isn't overprocessed, you could be pregnant (surprise!) or menopausal (yes, I can tell).

    PLUS: 7 Anti-Aging Secrets

    7. A trim is not "just" a trim. It requires my expertise, skill, knowledge, and time. Would you say to your dentist, "It's just a tooth," or to your doctor, "It's just a leg"?

    8. That single bill you stuff into the shampoo person's hands isn't doing her any favors. A dollar bill doesn't buy anything anymore. You should tip her at least $3-more if your hair is long.

PLUS: 20 Secrets Your Waiter Won't Tell You

    9. If you want to buy a bottle of color and do your own hair to save a buck, you can live with the consequences.

    10. Some clients will say, "Cut my hair just like you did last time." That always baffles me. The average time between appointments is six to eight weeks. I have hundreds of clients. How am I supposed to remember exactly how I did your hair the last time? If you want a carbon copy of a cut and style you loved, take a picture and show me.

PLUS: 13 Things Your Shoe Salesman Won't Tell You

    11. Why do you think a child's haircut should cost less than yours? Kids don't sit still. Kids kick. It's an intense experience.

    12. Standing all day and using scissors and a blow-dryer takes its toll-I have arthritis in my fingers, calcium deposits in my wrist, and 10 percent less hearing than I used to. I am a physical wreck.

    13. We see women at their worst. Their hair is wet, they have foils on their hair, they have no makeup on. There's nothing for them to hide behind. So they tell us everything. The truth is, I really don't care what they do sexually. I'm only interested in their hair.

I love when they beg to get squeezed in Like I can magically create more hours in the day. "But I've been a client for so many years!" they say. Oh yeah? Then you should know by now how busy we are. BOOK AHEAD. And on the rare occasion that I'll book an appointment after hours or before we open? They know I'm doing them a favor but show up late anyway. When you see a "DBF" charge on your ticket, know that stands for "douche bag fee". And if you've ever wondered why your hairdresser is always late, look at the person in their chair. You can thank that person for showing up late and wasting YOUR time as well as mine.

Are all of you living in a box? First of all, if your not a stylist, please dont leave a comment, you have NO idea how to relate! Second of all, i am a very very well known stylist. i have been doing hair 12 years and make a beautiful salary which grows yearly. I am great at what i do and have a loving loyal clientele. Now, are they late sometimes and screw up my entire day? Yup! I then run late for every other person! If you were next in line would u be happy? Also, take off an inch or 8, it takes the same amount of time! There is no such thing as a trim, its a CUT! Box haircolor, ha ha ha, go for it! Any stylist will laugh with me, see ya in a week for a $200 corrective! (try the home done hilites too :))........This article is simply saying be aware of this occupation and have a tad more respect for stylists and other service industry workers.

i can't believe you have any guests at all. get an attitude adjustment. As a hairstylist, it's a disgrace to read your post.
    • Kaitlyn Stoufer  •  1 year 3 months ago
Hey maryliz I wouldn't get a tip from you any way. You know why, because I wouldn't do your hair in the first place exspecially with your kind of attitude.
    • lynda  •  1 year 7 months ago
i live in australia and we don't tip anyone unless they have done a really good job.i refuse to go near stylists as i think most of them are arrogant with an over inflated opinion of themselves.

No, a haircut is an amputation or tooth extraction, but a trim takes the same length of time and percission in cutting whether it is a centimeter or an inch!
    • Snow White  •  2 years 2 months ago
hey retards the editor is saying the things ur hairstylist wont tell you so ull be polite. duh
    • KATHRYN J  •  2 years 2 months ago
Wow. If the woman who wrote this was my stylist, she'd get zero tip from me. Quite the whiner. Not that she doesn't make some good points, but spare us the venom, please.

Once again, a trim is just a trim. I am not saying that because it is "just a trim", it doesn't require skill. But, it is also not a brand new style, with color, highlights & lowlights, a styling once it's done. Also, stop comparing a haircut to health care. It's so far beyond apples and oranges it's ridiculous. It is sad that you think you can even compare yourself to a doctor or a dentist.

If you feel like a trim requires no skill, get someone who hasn't gone to cosmetology school and has no experience with hair to cut it and see what it looks like. You wouldn't say it requires no skill to cook, or to ride a bicycle or even to walk. Anything that someone does requires knowledge and experience to do it properly. There are millions of hairs on your head. Not everyone has the same type of hair; cutting everyone's hair the same way will at some point create an awful trim. Regardless of how simple you think a haircut is, it is complex sculpture which takes quite a bit of time to master.

when i go have my hair done, i want all of her attention on me , i do not want her cutting my hair and talking to some one else about
their problems or about other ppls stuff. i don't care about the gossip. if i need a thripst i will go to
one, but i just want my money's worth

You don't save a buck coloring your own hair, you can save $100.

Something that wasn't addressed are the stylists that CHARGE MORE for women's hair regardless of length, and charge less for men's hair regardless of length, time, etc. I've seen men next to me in a salon taking longer than me with their requests, and I'm still charged more because I'm a woman! It's discrimination, and it needs to stop! Charge based on time if you want to be biased.

I was a good hairstylist. I quit for the fact that someone would bring a magazine pic in to copy their new haircut. I did the cut exactly, and they still whined. I hate to say it, but most women expect to look like the pic. Sorry, you PROBABLY won't be as pretty as Sela Ward after the cut, from the pic. I know, reality bites.

My best friend is a stylist. She has been in the industry for over 30 years.
She gives me the best service, not because she is my friend, but because she is fantastic. She treats all her clients the same.
She has saved me from my own self, as far as what will look great on me.
She has a clientele that follows her wherever she goes.
That is how great she is!
      BTW
I think the article was very funny!

"I can give you Gisele Bündchen's haircut, but I can't give you her face."

Who expects this? I don't think I have ever done any of these things as a client, and my sister, who has owned a hair salon for 15 years, laughed at this article.
    • John  •  2 years 2 months ago
You bitter Queen!!! How about taking us at the appointment time and if you own the salon you don't need a tip - I do agree with the shampoo tip in theory but if you paid her a real wage (and said no tips) and raised your price to cover it would be better for her and you in the long run.

Also you guys like to raise your prices like every six months - get a clue no is getting raises. Hope you like looking at your empty chair!
