19 easy ways to look ten years younger

Ericka McConnellEricka McConnellREAL SIMPLE. REAL LIFE. fashion expert Sam Saboura and beauty pro Ashlee Barnes share these dos and don'ts for how to take a decade off your age -- no Botox required.

DON'T skip sunscreen. Experts sound like a broken record on this issue for a reason: Rain or shine, you need sunscreen to prevent skin damage and, potentially, cancer. (P.S.: It's never too late to start.)

DO drink 64 oz. of water a day. H20 is the best skin-care product out there, and probably the cheapest. Guzzling plenty of the stuff keeps your skin radiant and energy levels up.

DON'T sleep in your makeup. It will clog your pores, promote blackheads, and dehydrate your skin, all of which enhance the signs of aging. Cleansing and moisturizing every night before bed is a must.

DO use waterproof or long-lasting eyeliner and mascara, which won't run into creases around the eyes.

Check out Fall Makeup That Flatters Everyone at Real Simple.

DON'T use any cosmetics that have glitter in them -- the specks cling to wrinkles -- and, worse, it'll look like you're trying to go back to high school. Instead, look for words on the packaging like "luminous" and "shimmer," which have a subtle and flattering sheen.

DO eat organic foods whenever possible. When you put lots of unhealthy chemicals and preservatives in your body, it shows. (And be sure to take a multivitamin to guarantee you're getting your daily dose of nutrients.)

DON'T wear makeup that is too matte, especially foundation and lipstick. The flat finish tends to sink into wrinkles and highlight them.

DO wear jewel-tone clothing. Rich, saturated colors (think deep purples, greens, reds, and blues) instantly brighten up the skintone, which tends to get sallow with age. Note: Many women of a certain age tend to wear pastel, which actually washes them out.

DON'T hang on to the same old pair of jeans, no matter how much you love them. Staying on top of denim trends -- the current cut, wash, finish, etc. -- keeps you looking modern. (One word of warning: Avoid falling for teenybopper fads -- whiskering, rips, low rises, etc.-- no matter how popular they get.)

DO pay attention to where you bare skin. If you have a lot of freckling or age spots in certain areas -- say, the décolletage -- then pick another body part to show off. And remember: shoulders age well on almost anyone!

DO be realistic about whether you should wear sleeveless tops. If your arms are ultratoned, then by all means, go for it. But if there's any jiggle or loose skin, a ¾-length sleeve is universally flattering.

DON'T shop the juniors department. When you're wearing an item of clothing that was intended for someone several decades younger than you, it shows.

DO burn your twin-sets. They are dated, and they scream school marm. A long, lean cardigan is a contemporary upgrade.

DON'T be too matchy-matchy. It's not fresh or youthful to match exactly (pink earrings with a pink sweater and pink and black flats); instead, find pieces in colors and patterns that complement each other.

DO splurge on fashion-forward handbags. (A soft, slouchy style for daytime and a clutch for evening are a great start.) Why, you ask? Because the phrase "old-lady purse" exists for a reason.

DO update your capri pants. As with jeans, the ruling shapes and styles of these change seasonally -- so if you bought yours during the last presidential administration, it's definitely time to hit the stores.

DON'T fall into the trap of wearing ugly footwear just because it's comfortable. The excuse of "I just don't want my feet to hurt" simply doesn't fly anymore, when there are so many wonderful and cushy flats to choose from.

DO wear structured pieces on your upper half, such as fitted jackets and shirts with seaming details. They will help keep less-than-six-pack abs locked and loaded.

DO highlight your waist whenever possible; as some women get older, their bust and tummy seem to merge into one. A wide belt, nipped-in blazer or a cardigan that ties at the waist are the perfect antidote.

I've heard that future generations will place less emphasis on looks, and even less time writing about such mindless topics. I suppose by then mankind will have regained what seems to be a massive global loss of self-esteem.

      I didn't see anything a hair!

The number 1 way to look younger is to let your hair grow long and naturally. Monkey with your hair at your own age peril. You will look older.

i think the comment about wearing sleeveless shirts was in very poor taste.so what if someone has "jiggly" arms or loose skin.if someone is confident enough to not be self conscience about such things,i say good for them! why should women be ashamed of their bodies? every women has imperfections, telling us to cover them up and hide them sends out a really bad message.

I always ignore the "wear a belt" advice. That only works to emphasize your waist if you HAVE a waist. I have the dreaded apple or board shape (waist not much smaller than my hips - I tend to carry all extra weight right on the waistline) and since I am not paid to look good I just have to make the best of it and try to be as healthy as I can. I will never be slender. Wearing a belt or tucking in a shirt only makes gals like me look plumper and shorter (and older) than we actually are. Jeans that fit at the waist do the same thing, plus I would always end up with big flaps of material around my hips when I tried them. But for those who yearn for them, I recall seeing an "at waist" fit at Old Navy last time I was there. "Super low" should always be avoided - no matter what your age. Hideous.

Lots of bunk!! As one who has just cured herself of cancer using NATURAL everyday available herbs/supplements/vitamins, I can tell you that 1/2 of what you say above are lies. First off, sunscreen CAUSES cancer!! AVOID it at all costs! The sun beats thise chemicals into your skin and causes cancer, plus it blocks the vitamin D you so desperately need to prevent skin cancer and other cancers. You should be taking at LEAST 5000 i.u.'s of Vitamin D per day plus the sun! Do your research!! Visit naturalnews.com and read! The NATURAL sunscreen herbs are coconut oil, astaxanthin and green tea extract..you will NOT burn and in fact will lose a tan in 2 weeks because these things HEAL your skin and tanning is skin damage! Now, drinking water is fine, as long as you filter it both for drinking and showering. Somehow drinking chemicals and chlorine is NOT healthy and showering in it with warm water which opens your pores and you absorb the poisons thats way is NOT healthy either!
Forget that daily multi vitamin. The FDA does not tell you that the stuff in those pills are no where NEAR what you need to stay healthy. Google coconut oil....and astaxanthin..........and get on both ASAP. In addition to your calcium, vit D, 4000 mg day vit C, green tea extract at 1000 mg. day....then feel full of energy and healthy! Lay off MEAT, white flour, sugar and alcohol! NO SMOKING. NOW you can be healthy.

Almost everything in the article is good advice except for the sleeveless tops and flab. Hey, my philosophy is that "it is what it is". I live in Florida and sleeveless tops are a necessity. I think a lot of women care too much about what other people think. I think some of the most beautiful women are in their 70's, wrinkle, flab, and all. I would rather be an old lady than never have been lucky enough to see flab, wrinkles and gray hair. Lorraine

For the most part, good tips. However, I take issue with how many articles say that equate freckles to things like acne and age spots. When did having freckles become something you should hide and be ashamed of? I fall under the "dark Irish" category - black hair, dark eyes, pale skin, and tons of freckles - and I'm proud of it. It's sad to see so many articles acting like freckles are horrible and need to be hidden.

      Oh sure, these tips are excellent, however, I have this problem;
      -I'm short-4". EVERYTHING gets hemmed.
-I'm 35, but I look least 27, no one believes it when I tell them my real age
      -I'm busty-32D
-I'm small footed-5 1/2-it's nearly impossible for me to find shoes.

So, my is bottom line is, I buy what fits me, no matter what department I find it in. I think I look pretty fabulous, damn it I work hard at it!!

I've totally been slacking off on taking my makeup off at night...I've been so run down I just pass out on the couch and then drag myself to bed in the middle of the night. This has reminded me of how gross that is. Well, that and the fact I woke up the other morning with sandpaper/old makeup skin. Eeeew!

Have y'all been in my closet?! My daughter's comments exactly! OK...I give up. Y'all win! I said I'd never go back to hip-huggers or bell bottoms of the 70's, but now I have low-rise flared jeans. I said I never wear the "page boy" again, but as of yesterday, I have the latest undercut hair style. However, wherez the match? I am a school marm with twinsets, matte makeup, and glitter shadow! Thanks for a great article!!!
