If you think lace--a spring trend we've seen everywhere from Dolce & Gabbana to Zac Posen--has to mean frilly and sweet, think again. We've got three cool new ways to try out this trend without feeling like you're celebrating your first communion all over again.
#1: Experiment with bold color.
Defy expectations when you wear lace by avoiding the neutral route; white lace has automatic bridal connotations, black screams sex appeal, and nude's been overdone. Instead, take a cue from Penelope Cruz--seen here in a plum number by L'Wren Scott--and embrace lace in a hot hue. Anchor the look with black accessories (or accents, like a black T-shirt with a blue lace skirt) to keep things from getting too wild.
#2: Add menswear-inspired pieces.
Lace with leather? Been there, done that. With florals and animal prints? Sorta snoozy. The freshest way to wear lace now is to mix it up with menswear--a tailored blazer with a lacy cami underneath, a pair of tweed trousers with a sheer lace blouse, or a lace skirt with a great vintage vest. Pull your hair into a sleek ponytail and top things off with simple gold accessories.
#3: Just add a touch.
It's in-between season right now (have you done the closet switchover yet?), which makes it perfect weather for tights--a lacy pair adds instant oomph to your LBD. Ditto a lace clutch with jeans and a white T, or a pair of lace pumps with your favorite cargo pants.
What do you think of these ideas, dolls? Are you inspired to try out lace this season? How do you wear yours? Discuss!
