    3 Homemade Acne Treatments

From Extraordinary Uses for Ordinary Things

Discover how aspirin, olive oil, and toothpaste can stop that pimple fast!

Even those of us who are well past adolescence can get the occasional pimple. Put the kibosh on those annoying blemishes by crushing one aspirin and moistening it with a bit of water. Apply the paste to the pimple, and let it sit for a couple of minutes before washing off with soap and water. It will reduce the redness and soothe the sting. If the pimple persists, repeat the procedure as needed until it's gone.

    2. Olive Oil
Okay, the notion of applying oil to your face to treat acne does sound a bit wacky. Still, many folks swear this works: Make a paste by mixing 4 tablespoons salt with 3 tablespoons olive oil. Pour the mixture onto your hands and fingers and work it around your face. Leave it on for a minute or two, then rinse it off with warm, soapy water. Apply daily for one week, then cut back to two or three times weekly. You should see a noticeable improvement in your condition. (The principle is that the salt cleanses the pores by exfoliation, while the olive oil restores the skin's natural moisture.)

    3. Toothpaste

Your teenager is bemoaning a prominent pimple, and the day before the dance too! Tonight, have her or him dab a bit of non-gel, nonwhitening toothpaste on the offending spot, and it should be dried up by morning. The toothpaste dehydrates the pimple and absorbs the oil. This remedy works best on pimples that have come to a head. Caution: This remedy may be irritating to sensitive skin.

Take fish oil. Your skin needs the Omega-3's and it's not getting it.

my son had a problem with acne. he puts miracle whip on his face for about 10 min every night before he showers. the vinegar in the miracle whip cleanses his skin and the oil keeps it from drying out. it costs about $4 for a giant jar, as opposed to $8 or more for tiny tubes and works great.

Coconut oil is the best. It has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. Organic virgin coconut oil is well-absorbed and can clear the skin in a matter of days.

The Mims... I've heard coconut oil is good for clearing skin but don't know how to use it (ie: as a toner? or to spot-treat?). Can you fill me in? And where do you buy it?

I use coconut oil as my only moisturizer, day and night. I use a small amount- maybe a teaspoon -and gently rub it into my face and neck until it absorbs a bit. It shouldn't feel too greasy. I can even wear makeup over it and the makeup looks great-- not oily at all.
You can use it all over your entire body, and also as a "hot oil treatment" for the hair.
I get mine in large containers online but you can get small jars at good grocery stores that carry healthier foods or health food stores for around $10. Make sure it's unbleached, virgin and organic.
Note: coconut oil will melt at 76 degrees so depending on temperature of your home, it can either be a clear liquid or a milky-white solid (or a mix of both) . Some people think it's "bad" if it's a solid but that's perfectly normal. If it's solid, put a dab in the palm of your hand to let it melt.
And feel free to eat it too! I use it in place of butter/oil. It's much healthier.

Scramble a raw egg yolk and put on your face until it dries like a mask, then rinse with water. The vitamin A in the yolk is what I hear clears the acne. I learned this from a person who grew up in India. It seems to be a popular method there.

You can't use an exfoliant like salt every single day. It sets you new skin cell production into overdrive, which can block your pores and make acne worse, not including how sensitive it will make your face.
