3 Ways to Prevent a Breakout (and 3 Ways to Cover One Up)

Getty ImagseGetty ImagseHave you often coveted the smooth, glassy skin of celebrities and models? Many of these ladies would attribute their flawless faces to stress control. But from New York City dermatologists to Hollywood makeup artists, everyone says there's a lot more you can do to tame a skin tantrum.

    PREVENTION

At Home: When you've got an oil spill, you tend to want to clean it up. But over-scrubbing just provokes the skin to break out more angrily-which is why you should wash gently and use a towel that you save only for your face, says New York dermatologist and psychiatrist Amy Wechsler, MD. The next temptation? To take that poor pimple out of its misery. You know you shouldn't, but maybe a little squeezing won't hurt, just this once? Honestly, not a good idea. "This is especially true for patients with darker skin, who often end up with dark brown spots at the sites of pimples-it's actually called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)," says Andrew Alexis, MD, MPH, director of the Skin of Color Center at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital. "PIH generally improves over time, but very slowly."

At the Drugstore: The two main over-the-counter remedies are salicylic acid, which helps slough off the dead sticky skin cells, and benzoyl peroxide (don't go above 2.5% on your face), which kills bacteria. "You can completely overdo it, dry out the skin, and break out more," says Wechsler. She recommends trying just two OTC products, together or alone, and if your skin doesn't improve in a few weeks, see a dermatologist.

At the Doctor: A number of prescription topical medications, oral drugs, and therapies-including retinoids, long-course antibiotics, blood pressure drugs, birth control, and Isolaz (a light and vacuum treatment)-can all be helpful depending on the type of acne. "Accutane is the closest thing we have to a cure," says Pam Jakubowicz, MD, a dermatologist at Montefiore Medical Center. "If you have a risk of scarring, don't wait, because that can be permanent."

    COVERUP

Hollywood Makeup Artist: For emergency blemishes, celebrity makeup artist Kerry Herta first uses a dab of Visine, followed by a color corrector to cancel the red. "A staple of my kit is Face Stockholm's blemish and capillary concealer," she says. The finale is a concealer-she likes Koh Gen Do-just a pat, with a little translucent powder on top to set it in place.

Magazine Beauty Director: Valerie Monroe, who's written countless Ask Val columns on the topic for
O, the Oprah Magazine, says, "Some people recommend a green concealer to counteract the red, but I find that unless I blend it so hard it disappears, it looks... green." She suggests using a yellow-based under-eye type concealer. Don't go lighter in color than your skin, a common mistake. And avoid heaping on the translucent powder. "If you're broken out," she says, "the worst thing you can do is to look like you've tried to cover it up."

Dermatologists: Whatever makeup you use, Jakubowicz suggests sticking with products that are labeled "non-comedogenic," "won't clog pores," and "non-acne forming." The term "oil free" however can be misleading, she says, "because the product may contain mineral oil." She also advises avoiding cosmetics with isopropyl myristate, shea butter, and cocoa butter. What you should use, many skin specialists agree, is mineral-based makeup. "The minerals sit on the surface of the skin rather than being absorbed and clogging the pores," says Wechsler. "And they're inert, so they can't cause inflammation."

Once you've made sure you're treating your skin as well as you can, and concealed to your best ability, says Monroe, try to move on. "It's awful when you break out and that's all you can think about," she says. "Life is just too short."

The best thing I ever did was use accutane. I was so sad in high school because of the acne. My doctor tried other options first of course then put me on Accutane. It was a miracle and helped my self esteem. I am a firm believer.

When I was going through adolescence my face would break out quite a bit. The old home remedy that I used and that worked quite well was Witch Hazel. It's cheap and does the job.

I am 45 years old and i used Accutane in 1992 and 1994 ( 2 rounds). This drug got rid of my terrible cystic acne that i had been dealing with since i was 14.The side effects of Accutane were bad.My faced cleared up for about 2 years. After 2 years of clear skin my face started breaking out again.I went to 4 Dermatologist. I was on so many antibiotics, skin creams, and cleansers i thought i was going crazy.I started to get more depressed and developed Crohns Disease. I cannot take many antibiotics because my body build up resistance so they dont work anymore. The sad thing about all this is I have let Acne rule my life for so many years.I now have to take drugs for crohns disease ,depression and anxiety.I still get some bad breakouts and i have used every possible drug on the market to clear it up.I will be 46 yrs. old in September and i am just going to let my face be as it is... I will wash it with mild cleanser and LIVE MY LIFE! I am Just Happy to be Alive anymore.:)

For anyone considering having children, Accutane is a HUGE no-no.Seriously, it is poor form to mention Accutane in this article and not have a disclaimer about the lawsuits and serious side effects.

Would it be possible to list an alternative to benzoyl peroxide? I know a LOT of people who are allergic to it. Salicylic acid doesn't always do the job for them either.

I've had troubled skin since I was 10 yrs. old. Through my dermatologist, I tried it all - Retin A, Salycylic Acid, Tetracycline, everything - then as a last resort, a half-dose of Accutane (32 yrs. old by this time). My skin cleared up as long as I was using it. Despite drinking water non-stop, using moisture eye drops and a non-comedogenic moisturizer 3x a day, I ended up in the emergency room after waking up one morning and my eyelids had dried to my corneas! I immediately stopped taking the Accutane (and my skin eventually reverted back to it's old state...sigh), but I have permanently damaged eyes. Also, I can't be positive it was the Accutane, but 6 mos. after discontinuing the drug, my Thyroid failed. Just be VERRRY VERRRY careful with this drug - it may do more harm than good and affect other organs, as it did me!

The correct treatment is different for every one. We are all individuals with different skin types and bodies. Accutane might be a life saver for some but hell for others. My benzol peroxide and Clyndimycine (sp?) Were my worst nightmare because it shrinks your pores and mine were already small and just created more painful acne for me.

My hubbie used ACCUTANE and it cleared up everything only when he was takin off of it he was left with Colitis. Colitis is a very painful, uncureable intestinal condition that cost him a lot more in the end and oh yeah the acne came back. Always think before you put something in your body cause its gonna be digested in your body.

I won't weigh in on the Accutane debate, but I thought I would share my best two productsI find the best way to keep acne away. I wash my face with Clearasil Daily Face Wash for sensitive skin--it's creamy and not drying. Then I use Neostrata 15% glycolic lotion at night. It exfoliates and really evened and brightened my skin and faded all my red marks. Sunscreen in the day. That's it. I don't work for any of these companies, but I found the combo that works the best for me. I have large pores and oily skin, and I also need an antiager but can't tolerate many.

Okay, I have one BARELY starting on my nose.
Gah. I don't want it to get any bigger. Which product has
like the best benzoyl peroxide or anything to dry it out or
      break it up? Help. :D

This article is the only one I can actually relate ot when it comes to acne and wanting facial beauty. I used Accutane myself recently and it cleared me up well! Trust me, I had extremley severe acne
(to the point that I started breaking out inside the skin, causing really bad inflammation and redness.) This article tells the truth cause I've experienced everything that's written on here. Normally people say that most outrageous things to taking care of your skin. This article right here though is the answer! ( From the first sentence to the last!) She's absolutley right.

I have suffered from acne for over 20 years. As a young teen, it made me feel very insecure and also contributed to low self-esteem. I tried many different products, including prescription topical antibiotics until finally a dermatologist recommended Tretinoin. It did make my face very dry at first, but that was clearly listed as a side effect, so I expected that. But my face has been the clearest that it has ever been and so far it's worked for more than 2 months. A record for me!
Every person's chemistry is different-what may work for one person may not for another. (Just like anti-depressants) You have to research and try many different options before finding what works for you. In my case it took almost 25 years!

this article is really true.. if i had small pimples, i didn't squeeze it, bcoz it might give more problems... i just used simple and non harsh facial wash.. concealer is the best remedy for me to cover blemishes. I don't used now summer cake or foundation bcoz i just have allergy and it only caused pimples.. choosing right skin product or make up is depend on your skin..

If anyone knows how to deal with the deep acne scarring, please communicate that information. I have had dermabrasion and microdermabrasions plus chemical pills, accutane, and every other acne product available including birth control pills. I have used cover make-ups as well which do a poor job for me. 'Regular" make-up does nothing. I am old enough to know better, but sometimes I just want to hide my scars.

I am 37 yo. & I get a zit MAYBE 1-2 times a year . When I do , I use a product from Sephora , I think its by Benefit . it also has salicylic acid ... if I put it on @ nite , it is GONE the next morning . Also , Ive heard that if u crush an asprin ( salicylic acid ) and add just enuf h20 to make it pasty , it will get rid of ur zit fast ! These solutions r for the ocassional zit - not acne issues .

Accutane's not a CURE. A cure means it's gone and it won't come back for a long time. Anything you have to take for the rest of your life is no cure.

but what should you do if you are HIGHLY allergic to Benzoil Peroxide? I put just a teeny bit on and I'm in the E.R. because my face is so swollen i cant even see.
