    4 Do-It-Yourself Hair Remedies

The secrets to rescuing your brittle, over-processed strands might just be in your refrigerator.

Let's face it: Lustrous hair can take a lot of upkeep. Even if your stylist doesn't make house calls, fear not. "You can give your hair the TLC it needs to look its best by using items you have at home," notes Lorri Goddard Clark for the Privé Salon in Los Angeles, whose clients include Reese Witherspoon. Here, she dishes on her tried-and-true recipes for getting - and maintaining - healthy hair.

And check out these ways to get salon looks in 15 minutes-faster than your morning commute!

    1. Feed Your Head

"You can't have full, bouncy hair without a healthy scalp," says Goddard-Clark. To reduce excess oil, dampen a cotton ball with witch hazel, dab it along your hairline and part, and rinse hair with cool water. Fight flakes weekly by adding five drops of tea-tree oil to your favorite shampoo as a booster. Skip conditioner, though, and apply a detangler only to the ends of your hair - your scalp may be sensitive after this treatment.

    Marie Claire Tip:
Before any type of scalp treatment, check for burns from hot tools that could be easily irritated.

    2. Add Volume

Lifeless strands got you down? in a bowl, mix one egg yolk, a half cup of honey, two tablespoons of olive oil, and two small, ripe avocados. Apply the concoction to the entire head and leave on for one to two hours, until hard. Shampoo and condition as usual. "This is a miracle cure," notes Goddard-Clark. "And for extra-bouncy, nonfrizzy curls, Drew Barrymore taught me to blot ringlets dry with paper towels."

    Marie Claire Tip:
Short on time? Apply this mask only to bangs or small pieces around your face. These areas are the most abused by heat styling.

    3. Boost Shine

"Dull, overstyled hair benefits from regular olive- or jojoba-oil masks," explains Goddard-Clark. Starting at the roots, brush a quarter cup of natural oil (synthetic oils don't work as well) through dry hair and leave it on for an hour. Blast the ends with a dryer for five minutes to help oil penetrate deeper. Skip the roots - the scalp emits enough warmth on its own, and applying extra heat could lead to greasy textures later.

    Marie Claire Tip:
Cut washing time and add shampoo to strands before they get wet to dissolve the oil faster.

    4. Preserve Color

Minerals in the water system can cause brassiness for blondes and redheads. A quick fix? Mix a quarter cup of distilled white vinegar with a half cup of filtered water and pour it over hair before rinsing with cool water. Graying brunette beauties need to be careful, too. "Peroxide-based dyes give darker shades a reddish hue," warns Goddard-Clark. Use a toothbrush to paint boxed dye over individual strands.

    Marie Claire Tip:
to neutralize the scent of vinegar or harsh hair dyes, add a few drops of an oil essence, like lavender.

Hmmm...No you do not use the peel in the blender!!! or the pit please throw the avocado skin and pit into the trash. I have recieved a couple of comments from some very ill informed people. I am assuming that they are not really interested in their hair. just trolling.

Denise, you don't just "sit around for a hour with a hair full of gunk". You DO stuff like clean your house.

When I was a little girl, my Aunt and Grandma would put mayonnaise on my hair once a week as a conditioner, and let it sit for about 30 minutes, then rinse out.
At other times they would rinse my hair in beer for added shine.

well it couldn't get more confusing when i read "Boost shine starting at roots. Brush a quarter cup of natural oil through dry hair and leave it on for an hour. Blast the ends . . . Skip the roots . . . the scalp emits enough warmth on its own"
so, , , do we apply at the roots or skip the roots - how the heck am i supposed to know what you are talking about with a flub like that?

To the person that left a comment wondering if you should put the avocado mix on ALL of your hair because you have long hair, the answer is yes, you want to coat all of your hair from root to end with the mix. There is a photo in the article showing the back of a woman's head, with her long, brown hair coated in a mixture; that is the avocado mix. Hope this helps.

I have been a hairdresser for more than 20 years and this is absolute crap and costs more than hair products... professional or store bought. Do yourself a favor and eat the avocados.

Nobody is going to be using some of these remedies every day such as the Avocado remedy. There is no way that the vinegar rinse costs more than the products you buy in the store. You can get a gallon of the stuff for only a few dollars and at least you know where its from rather than all the chemicals in the products you get professionally or from a store. I've been using remedies like these since childhood and never once have I had a hair dresser tell me that my hair looked like crap. In fact, I've been asked by many of them what I do to keep my hair looking so healthy despite the fact I color it and use heat, etc.

My mother's been a hair dresser for about 35 years and she is the one who first introduced them to me and encouraged me to continue using them because they are in fact a lot less expensive then the stuff from the store and much more natural. I pay over $40 bucks every month for chemical laden professional products that do what the above and similar treatments do or spend that about every six months and make my own products and use remedies like these. Seems like an easy choice to me.

ladies the avocado will tame hair that is very curly/kinky or dry and frizzy. Get a very ripe avocado skin it put in blender with a little bit of water.Just enough to become creamy.
now you can add: / Olive oil / good for hair/scalp / cod liver oil / good for hair/scalp I use both. Cover hair/scalp put on shower cap leave on one/two hrs. Shampoo ! Hair will feel fantastic.

Wonderful - then I can first eat the avo, and just use the skin for my hair - much better idea!!

soo basically this is for people with straight hair.

why not put something useful about people born with kinky or curly hair?

Step 2 sounds yummy. Will work with regular crackers or the whole wheat?

a baking soda 'wash' is fine if you don't have color-treated hair. It will strip/remove some of the color. For those that don't have the time to sit around for an hour w/your hair full of gunk don't do it and just know that folks will likely say 'what a dreadfully dull looking head of hair'. You don't have to spend a fortune to publicly appear well-groomed.

I wonder if you can volumize and boost shine in the same day, and which one would be done first?

Crazy Glue and mashed potatoes do wonders for the hair.

I agree that most of these are not for women of color. I have tried the natural oil and my hair was the same as usual.

I grew up with many home remedies and one that always stuck with me was egg and olive oil on your hair for fullness and manageability. We all know that natural ingredients are always the best way to nourish every part of you. I used to admire the fancy bottles and labels on mass-produced items, but now I know better.
