What kinds of dresses must a woman have in her closet? And how many should she own: 3? 5? More than 7?
We turned to Lori Ann Robinson, a Los Angeles-based Image/Fashion Consultant and founder of LAR Consultants for help. When personal shopping for her clients, who are often mature women over 50, Robinson recommends they invest in the following 5 dress styles to complete their wardrobe.
1. Sheath Dress
A sheath dress is a must-have that you can pair with a sweater, jacket, or a number of accessories to change up your look. "Choose your best dark neutral such as black, gray, navy or brown," says Robinson, "and make sure the hemline hits at a flattering point on your leg - usually right below the knee." She advises that this is the best length for all of the dresses in your closet, as you don't want to go too short.

2. The Wrap Dress
"If you are trying to disguise a tummy, a dress with a bit of draping in the front will camouflage this problem," says Robinson. Wrap dresses are a perfect choice for this, and are great because you can adjust them to fit and flatter your shape. Diane Von Furstenberg, the queen of the wrap dress, is a name you should look out for when shopping for one.

3. Little Black Dress
You probably already know how essential the LBD is, as it works for a variety of occasions. "It should be your go-to cocktail dress, with perhaps a tad of bling," says Robinson. "One that is somewhat fitted in the waist, then flares out is very feminine and looks good on many women."

For those last minute formal affairs, like a luncheon or a special ceremony, a refined dress with a matching coat or jacket is a stress-free option to have at your disposal. "Think Mad Men chic," says Robinson. "A neutral will work during different seasons, like beige, taupe, gray, etc."

5. Lightweight Dress
For warm weather, a lightweight, casual dress will ensure you stay cool and fashionable. Robinson suggests looking for a linen or cotton shirtdress. "Just add a bright, fun cardigan to it on chilly nights," she says.
