5 Simple Ways to Conserve Your Makeup

For those of us who use it, makeup can add up to be a substantial part of our budgets. Here are five tips to conserve your cosmetics and save a few bucks.

    A Frugal Foundation Trick

Natalie DeStefano, makeup artist at the Rita Hazan Salon in NYC, recommends wetting your makeup sponge slightly before you dip it into your foundation. The dampness will cause the sponge to absorb less product, thus leaving more in the bottle.

    Squeeze More Swipes

Get a few more uses out of an almost-gone mascara by standing it in a glass of warm water or heating it up with a hair dryer.

    Save Your Mascara Wand
Wash it thoroughly and use it to tame unruly eyebrow hairs or to separate and de-clump lashes. Oftentimes, great mascara application comes from the brush. If you aren't too keen on a newly purchased formula, use the wand from your tried-and-true to see if it makes a difference.

    Use a Lip Brush
Slathering on your lipstick may cause you to overapply, which you'll only blot off onto a napkin. Use a lip brush and you'll save product, plus get a more even, precise color. Check out this one from e.l.f. (only $1 at eyeslipsface.com).

Line and Shadow-at the Same Time
In a pinch, you can use any eye shadow as an eyeliner. Pick up an eyeliner brush with short, stiff, angled bristles like one from e.l.f. (only $3 at eyeslipsface.com). Your best bet is to mist the tip of the brush rather than soaking it, which can ruin both the brush and the makeup. For a smudgy, nighttime look, try applying with a damp Q-tip. Try Essence Colour & Shine Eyeshadow, $2.99; ulta.com

i think it's funny that guys are commenting on this article...did you see it on your yahoo featured and say "oooh i wonder what the tips are!" and then rant about how girls shouldn't use make up...that's a little weird. i think a little make up every now and again is fun, but definitely not necessary. do what makes YOU happy and to others (you GUYS (ps no one asked you, we wear it for us not you)), STOP telling other people how to live their lives (haha as i proceed to do so ;) ) anyway, about the tips: like everyone else is saying watch out for the bacteria! with warmth and water it's bound to get ugly!

i never use my makeup until it is empty anyway. if anything i have way too much and i end up throwing alot away. i like fresh makeup and current color pallets. i'm sure most of us buy makeup a couple of times a month.

To all of you nay sayers about women wearing makeup,
Here's a real tip for you... Makeup is supposed to ENHANCE a woman's features NOT cover them up! NO one EVER is supposed to look like they have spackled their makeup on with a putty knife.
I have worn makeup everyday for 30 years and never once been criticized for it. WHY? Because It's been applied CORRECTLY!

How about not wearing make-up at all and being happy with who you are?

stop useing the crap. you don't need it. it is a waste of money.

I occasionally use a liquid eyeliner. To avoid a heavy line, I use a small angled brush to gently brush the eyeliner, similar to using a sponge applicator. It makes it look softer & doesn't look like a crooked like. Then I apply eyeshadow over it. If necessary, I reapply the eyeliner. It looks blended in & professional. I know, because I get a lot of compliments. Sometimes I get stopped in a store & asked who did my makeup!

Heating your mascara to get more out of it is a very bad idea unless you want an infection.
Bacteria love heat, and by the time the product is that far gone you have collected enough bacteria in the tube to start your own lab!

What kind of crap is this?!?!?! Almost all of these "tips" encourage bacteria growth. If you want to save your eyesight NEVER heat your mascara or save the wand. And wetting your makeup sponge will also cause bacteria to grow. Sick.

I have been warming up my mascara in warm water for almost 20 years and I've used it up to 6 months. 3-4 weeks, you have got to be kidding me, the person who suggested it must work for the cosmetic companies!! I have never had an eye infection. You are either prone to infections or you're not.

I got better tips from the comments on this article than the article itself! And all those guys bashing women who wear make-up, when done right, make-up doesn't look fake. But I think we can blame pop-culture and magazines for lowering women's self-esteem to make them feel the need to 'cake on' the make-up. So guys, stop obsessing over models or just lay off!

silly, silly arguments.....opinions are just that....and here is mine...i have seen some women who looked lovely without makeup but were not so nice inside....i've seen some with lots of makeup on who were wonderful people....i am 68 years old and have enjoyed wearing makeup or not...my choice...stop being so critical and enjoy people for who they are....urge young ones in your charge to learn to apply it well...but above all to take care of their skin...with or without makeup...a lovely smile and a beautiful spirit enhances everyone....

Oh my goodness, I've got so many comments running through my head right now it's ridiculous.

      1. Stop using sponges, q tips, etc. Show the money, buy makeup brushes and keep them clean. Brushes are a more sterile, accurate what to apply makeup anyway.

      2. Only shell out the big bucks for foundation. Eyeshadow, lipsticks, mascara, etc. all work the same whether they are cheap or expensive.

      3. Different application techniques work for different shapes and features. In other words, if I want raccoon eyes I will work it and look hot while doing it.

      3. Many of you can't read and are complaining about nothing! They don't tell you to dip a dirty sponge in your makeup! Nor does the article tell you to continuously heat your mascara for weeks on end. These are tips to get that last bit out or use less each time. If you are a woman and you don't know that you need a clean sponge each time you apply makeup, your problems run a little bit deeper than Yahoo can help.

I think everyone should listen to the post from: CA Mon Aug 23, 2010 5:37pm PDT. This person knows what they are talking about.

Oh and to all the geniuses who say the best way to conserve your makeup is to not wear any ever...Um, what? That's wasting all of it. Here's an idea...You go without makeup, and leave those of us who want to to make our own choices regarding what we want to purchase. Okay?

yes the estee lauder double wear spf 15 is great!!!! i encourage anyone to go and buy it...its a bit pricey but the bottle lasts a very long time and does a great job concealing everything. The only thing to make sure to do is to wear a moisturizer underneath and use makeup remover when taking it off...it is double wear so it will stay longer on your skin, you want to make sure everything is off before going to sleep especially (a toner also would help) And yes DO NOT heat up your mascara..its like 5 bucks just buy a new one, speaking of i should buy a new one hah!

How about doing more research before posting these articles? We all need to be aware of potential health issues especially when it comes to our eyes. Risking an eye infection is just not worth the extra 4 cents saved by forcing the last little bit of mascara out of the container.

I love the suggestion of mixing a little moisturizer in with our liquid foundation. Kudos to you for suggesting this!

Not only is make-up a waste of money but much of what you put on your face.... and apply to your underarms has a great risk.... much of this sh*t is a witches brew of toxic chemicals

These are all great suggestions. Another great idea is to line the upper lid with black liner then brush over it with a frosted shadow and it makes the liner a beautiful shade not as dark as the original black. Try it with lots of colors! I was a make up artist and beauty advisor for Estee Lauder for 14 years so there are lots of things one can do to make your makeup go futher and look differenct.
    • Nancy Sepulveda  •  1 year 9 months ago
I like the last one of it. Sometimes I tend to use my eyeshadows as a liner, when I'm done applying the shadow on my eye lids.

i loove wearing make-up. it enhances my features.
