5 Surprising Ways You're Ruining Your Skin

Just when us gals in the beauty department get all cocky and think we have our skin-beautifying routines all figured out (sunscreen every day, the right products for our skin type, eating plenty of antioxidant-rich foods, etc.), some smartypants dermatologist comes along and dishes out a bunch of new info to consider. We recently chatted with Dr. Dennis Gross (who is a constant stream of amazing skincare advice, BTW), and he opened my eyes to these five practices that could negatively affect your skin.

    1. Outdated glasses/contact lens prescription:
Anything that makes you squint - like reading or working in a poorly lit room, or not updating your contact lens prescription - leads to more fine lines and wrinkles around the eye area. Get thee to an eye doctor, stat!

    2. Steam rooms:
We all love a good detoxifying sesh in a steam room or sauna, but Dr. Gross says to limit your exposure to these extreme-heat bad boys because they decompose skin's elastin and collagen. Eeeeek!

    3. Running (or any high-impact exercise):
"While such exercise may benefit our hearts, it can cause the fat pads to slide south, and collagen and elastin to break down. If you enjoy running, try walking," explains Dr. Gross. OMG - remember on Ally McBeal when Jane Krakowski's character invented the face bra for jogging? It was for this!

    4. Not sleeping: Okay, it's not news that pulling an all-nighter makes your skin look like crud the next day, but did you know that chronic sleep deprivation leads to long-term skin probs? "Lack of sleep can be so stressful that it actually causes our bodies, including our skin, to generate free radicals," says Dr. Gross. More free radicals mean you look older, faster.

    5. Tap water: Chlorine in tap water can strip the natural oils from skin and cause dryness and irritation, especially in the winter when there is less humidity in the air to balance it out. I can vouch for that - I bought a new showerhead with a built-in water filter and have noticed fewer dry patches on my legs.

Obviously, if running is your passion then no one is suggesting you give it up. But maybe a trip to the eye doctor is in order, and get your sleep issues under control, why dontcha?

I agree with your high impact running effects on your skin's elasticity. My best friend is and avid runner while I, with two small children had to stay in with the ergometer and eliptical. I also enjoy vigorous walks when permitted. But at our class reunion it was obvious I had much more youthful skin, not only was my skin smoother but I had no liver spots or baggy eyes. Thanks for getting this info out there. For some it may not be too late to change your routine a little. Now I don't quiet dread 48 as bad!

Uhm...tap water is actualy just as good as water out of a jug, and not everyone can afford a water filter. Tap water is also safer than bottled water which gives off chemicals from the plastic, especially if you reuse them too often. Bottled water is over priced, anyway. You're just paying for the label. AND where are you getting your information about running bening bad for your skin? Where are the results from THAT experiment? Who's "Dr. Gross"?

What's the point of having nice skin if you are obese from not exercising?

Oh gosh, like the other comments I agree, ladies, lifespan and health come from vigorous activity. We're also American's meaning we may not eat the best, therefore we have to balance it out with something like running. Get a grip beauty magazines. Fast walking is not going to help us fit into our jeans like running may. Unless you alter your diet. I'm slightly disturbed by this advice.

As nutritionist and personal trainer, I agree with the other comments left. In a society that is slowly become more and more overweight it is negligible to suggest that anyone stop exercising. Running is good for your heart, it encourages bone density through light impact (something everyone on those elliptical machines, who don't have a joint injuries, are missing out on)and it helps elevate your metabolism which in turn equals ore cellular turn over which equals new younger looking skin cells. Saying that running is going to cause fat to slip down your face is like saying that belly fat will move to your hips, it physically can't. Fat is attached by tissues holding it place. Your body also decides where it will lose fat from first and where it will place it based on genetics. If you really want younger looking skin stay active and eat a colorful diet rich in antioxidants and vitamins that help prevent and reverse the effects free radicals have on your body. Studies are also showing that the effects of eating a diet like this can also have a postitve on lowering your risk for cancer double bonus.

Walking IS NOT a substitute for running!!!!!!! (Unless you're pregnant or injured) You can go ahead and keep telling yourself that walking 4 miles is "better" than running 4 miles. The reason you may be losing the "fat" pads under your eyes by running is perhaps because you are burning twice as many calories, developing twice as much muscle tone, reaching higher endorphin levels, higher heart rate levels, increasing your stamina........ than you would if you were walking. P.S. Walking is great...... just don't compare the two.

Hey, in one of my studies, I found out that if you get old, your skin wrinkles. I would advice you all to not get old.

The article left out SMOKING. After tanning - smoking is the worst thing you can do to your skin. Smoking causes wrinkles and gives you smokers face.

Also consider that bottled water does not contain flouride which is very bad for your teeth. Drinking tap saves you money and your teeth.

sorry to say but I squint all the time, I hate sunglasses and I don't have wrinkles and bad skin around the eyes. i'm turning 40 next year and still look early 30's
    • me  •  1 year 8 months ago
I run and love to run and have been running for about 40 years. I'm 50 now but still look a good 30. (I travel a lot and I am stopped at immigrations all over the world to verify the validity of my person when they see the age on my papers). OK, I'm one of the lucky ones. I run for endurance but I am coming more and more to understand that running is not a natural activity.

Short sprints, jumping rope, burbees and the like are much more beneficial without the negatives of running. I will advise my children not to take up running other than sprints.

Smoking should be at number 1. Closely followed by drinking. Exercise is bad for your skin ? Huh ? Squinting ? Lol. Ridiculous.....

I can't really take seriously an article that a) doesn't qualify its "expert" and b) uses language that even my fifteen-year-old sister would consider juvenile. ("Sesh"? "Prob"?)
