5 things that can ruin your skin (a friendly reminder)

Getty ImagesGetty ImagesLet's be honest with each other: No matter how enlightened one may be, the experience of discovering new wrinkles is everything from startling to a major bummer. It's not easy to watch yourself age, but it is inevitable. However, there are a few things we can do to take back the power, to slow down the process, and to make our faces look as young as possible for as long as they possibly can. You probably know most of this stuff, but you might have forgotten. Or, if you've been living under a little stone and have never heard of sunblock, it's honestly never too late to start practicing safe skin.

    1. Unprotected sun exposure
If we could be tan for the rest of our lives, we SO would, but tanning causes premature aging, fine lines, and unpleasant big brown splotches and freckles all over your skin (also: skin cancer. Scary!). This is why we should all be using moisturizers with SPF 30--and don't forget to slather it on your neck and hands, as well. They're two places with delicate skin that's prone to aging young.

    2. Smoking
Between the drying out and the toxins and the oxygen-zapping and the above-the-lip, pucker-inhale wrinkles, smoking does absolutely nothing good for your skin and really just makes you look old and gray-faced before your time.

    3. Booze
Ooh. I bet you liked those four Mojitos last night, but you know what? Your skin hated them. Alcohol dehydrates the skin, it can cause tiny red veins to rupture on your visage, and make you look as blotchy and flushed as Nick Nolte in a mugshot. To combat this: Down a glass a water between spirits, and limit consumption to just a couple of booze-y beverages per night.

    4. Sugar
Dear chocoholics, cookie monsters, and anyone who regularly polishes off a pint of Chunky Monkey: Sugar messes with your skin's collagen; it can lessen its repair function and speed up elasticity loss, leaving your face dull and saggy. Curb sweet tooth cravings by turning to natural sugars like those found in fruit or, even better, snack on a handful of almonds which are packed with both antioxidants (good for skin!) and protein.

    5. Dehydration
You know the rule: You need 8 to 10, 8-ounce glasses of water a day. As annoying as this is, it's just enough to keep your organs flushed and functioning and your skin hydrated from within. The second part of the hydration-equation is experimenting with skincare regimens until you find the right one for your budget and skin type. Essentially all you need is a mild cleanser, a good day moisturizer with SPF and slightly thicker night cream that's packed with vitamins and will give you skin-healing benefits while you sleep.

Yeah this is not news, it's common knowledge. Here's a few other well known things you forgot, stop touching your face, the grease on your hands will cause breakouts. Use clean pads, brushes and wipes to apply foundation, blush and other cosmetics besides your lotion.

yea..um.. I clicked on this link thinking it was going to tellme something I'd NEVER heard b4..but...unfortunately NOT.
& like some1 else posted.. GENETICS also play a large part.. you could NEVER drink, NEVER smoke, AVOID the sun & sugar, AND STILL end up with lines & wrinkles sooner than maybe u SHOULD... OR the other way around, if u have GOOD genetics, u can smoke, drink, tan, & eat all the chocolate in the world & not have a wrinkle on you until your 55years old! ..NO1 knows for sure how YOUR skin is going 2 end up..
LUCKILY (knocking on wood) I'll b 28 and don't have not 1 fine line or wrinkle NEwhere.. I DO wear sunscreen in my moisturizer, but I ALSO smoke (bout a pack every day& 1/2 to 2days)& only drink on special occassions, AND AM THE QUEEN of sugar! LOL
Blah Blah Blah -- unfortunately this article just didn't interest me AT ALL & was NOTHING that EVERY magazine hasn't been telling us for the past 10 years or so.

when my face is very very dry... I rinse it and do not dry and when it has dried naturally put on oil..any oil.. canola, olive, whatever I have. sometimes butter. (all I have to do then is put an apple in my mouth and go into oven right????) but it helps and feels good.

glycerin soap that locks in moisture when you wash (with plenty of tepid water), fennel oil (ancient wrinkle treatment), salmon, fish oil capsules daily (at least three), dead sea salt (try it, it is amazingly simple for sloughing off rough skin on your hands), sunblock daily, a hat, drinking enough water daily, facial exercises...just common sense, basic maintenance if you care enough about your skin's condition to do it. Oh, and alpha-hydroxy cream at nighttime--don't forget the ingredient hyluronic acid, either.

The best thing for your skin is Mary Kay Facials everyday. I have been using Mary Kay since 1970 and I no skin problems. Needless to say, I do not drink, smoke, nor do any of the above mentioned items. Sell your products you must, however, Mary Kay will make you bit the dust!

Little is said about invasive procedures like strong acid peels. Maybe once in a lifetime, when a person is middle-aged and craggy, but many women do this on a regular basis. It damages the stem cells in the skin, as does sun exposure. After a few of these peels people look like burn victims. Their natural ability to renew is highly diminished.

I understand that these things are bad for your skin, but there are people who obey these rules but break more obvious ones. Think about this: you're at school. You aren't allowed to carry a bottle of water around, the water fountains are disgusting, the school day is 7 hours long, and the only other opprotunity for a drink is during lunch. My point is that it's so hard to stay hydrated at my school. That takes up all my time, so if I obey all the rules but that one, it could make a difference. 5 days of the week out of 7 I'm at school, unless I'm absent or there's a break. In total...that's a lot of days I won't be completely hydrated. I'll list the other rules.

      Don't do drugs
Don't touch your face so much
Don't let oily hair get in your face often
      Wash your face
Wash off cosmetics before you go to sleep

Your skin might (emphasis on the might) be fine.
