8 Clever Makeup Tips You Haven't Heard Before

Makeup artists know all the secrets to looking great - those little tricks that can be picked up only by living in the beauty world 24/7 as they do. Fortunately, they're often as generous as they are knowledgeable. We talked with some of the best makeup artists in the business to get their best out-of-the-ordinary tips. (And no, we're not using the old "white eyeliner makes your eyes look bigger" thing. You've read it a hundred times.) Read on to see some of the best tips you haven't heard before.

    Ditch the oil slick
To keep shine in check, Revlon Global Artistic Director Gucci Westman always keeps blotting papers on hand. But in a pinch, she has an unusual way to keep oil at bay. "Believe it or not," she says, "I sometimes put deodorant on my finger and dab under my eyes and t-zone to help create a matte look."

    Try a colored eyeliner
Changing your eyeliner can make eyes look bigger and brighter, says makeup artist Tina Turnbow, who has worked with stars such as Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore. "Try swapping black for plum, olive green or indigo," she suggests. "Black can close up the eye and make it appear smaller, because darker colors make the eye recede. Some colors, even brown, can be softer."

    Go for sheer foundation
Adding aloe to foundation gives it excellent slip, says makeup artist Brett Freedman, who's helped women like Vanessa Hudgens and Leighton Meester get gorgeous. "Sheer out your favorite base by adding a half a pea size of aloe to your foundation before you apply," he explains. "Also, you can apply aloe to your face and while still dewy, spread on a little foundation. You're ready for summer!"

Style your brows, size up your eyes
Doug Howell, NARS makeup artist, has an easy trick for making eyes stand out more. "Use a powder to define the entire brow, but give extra attention to the center arch area of the brow," he says. "Since this is the highest area of the brow, it tricks people's eyes into thinking your eyes look bigger." Use a brow brush to apply powder eye shadows that correspond with your hair color. He recommends NARS single eye shadows in these shades: Blondie for lighter hair, Bali for medium hair and Coconut Grove for dark hair.

Create a wet look - for your lashes
"There's nothing sexier than the way lashes group together when they're wet, like after getting out of a pool," says MAC Senior Artist Victor Cembellin. "Here's the secret to the look: Apply MAC Brow Set in Clear to the eyelashes first, and then top with a coat of black mascara." The result: grouped, wet-look, sexy lashes.

    Leave your lipstick in place
The same product can be used to keep lipstick in check, says MAC Senior Artist Louise Zizzo. "MAC Brow Set in Clear used around the rim of the mouth will help prevent lipstick from bleeding," she explains.

Create a camera-perfect manicure When working with stars like Joy Bryant and Sheryl Crow , Dior celebrity makeup artist Ricky Wilson pays attention to details like fingernails. "One thing that I always do for nails is mix a bit of Dior's Skinflash pen with Dior Creme Abricot to get rid of any nicks at the base of the nail bed," he confides. "It also adds a beautiful sheen that I like to call 'red-carpet-ready' hands."

    Get Bambi lashes without mascara
You don't need mascara to make your eyelashes stand out, says mark celebrity makeup artist Mai Quynh, who has worked with actors including Emma Stone and Ashley Greene. Just add eyeliner, she says: "To get voluminous-looking lashes, apply dark brown or black waterproof eyeliner to the upper rim of your eye - not on top of the lashes, but in between and underneath them. This gives the illusion of thicker, fuller lashes without having a lined eye."

I do the last one, sometimes when I am already late for school and work, I have no time putting on mascara, but I put eyeliner instead, underneath my lashes, and it really gives a thicker and fuller lashes look.

I don't like the idea of NOT using mascara and only using eyeliner to make your lashes look fuller. That doesn't work at all! I have blonde, thin lashes, and the only thing that helps me is alot of mascara. And I also don't think wet, grouped together lashed look good either. I like lashes to look clean and separate. Oh, and dry! Also, I don't like to use a powder on my eyebrows. It doesn't work. I like to use a creamy brow pencil to enhance my eyes.

couldn't agree more with you. I'm a blond too, and without mascara I wash out completely, eyelashes and eyebrows. Some of us have to use it!

i could come up with better tips in my sleep! the only tips that are actually decent are colored eyeliner and styling your brows-only not the way they suggest. try a pencil with small dashes instead of one big drawn swoop and then brush it out slightly with a eyebrow brush. it will look natural. trust me, the girl with pale skin, thin and light eyelashes, and blonde eyebrows!

My question would be.... I have a nerve disease and I sweat a lot because of it. How do I keep foundation on when I have a sweat episode? Primer helps but still make-up slides off my face. I have to go with out during summer months or if I know I'll be somewhere warm, like G-ma's house. Any answer for that?

My wife uses something called lilash its pricey but her eye lashes have almost doubled in size. I see a big difference. Beautiful.

Actually, I have heard most of these and chose to discount all of them, save the colored eyeliner and sheer foundation. They make these things and have for years, nothing new.

Obviously someone has heard of them or they wouldn't be manufactured in the masses.

      My Favorites are:

Sheer Base: Aveno Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 to keep your face protected and just enough sheer tint to keep you comfortable in your own skin. ($15.00)

For eyeliner: My favorite is Prestige Total Intensity EyeLiner, Long Lasting Intense Color in Daring Green and Powerful Purple. They have a tiny bit of sparkle to them and they both make my eyes pop. (around $6.00, lasts a really long time)

I am fair skinned with auburn hair and super dark brown eyes, so these colors work wonders for my eyes. My lil Sis uses the purples on her sparkling steel blue eyes and it also looks beautiful on her. (She is also fair skinned and has auburn hair most of the time, when not purple or teal)

Blush/Highlights: Physicians Formula Happy Glow Multi-Color Face Powder, lil bit gives healthy color, love this stuff!

Lips: Bath & Body Works Mentha Lip Shine for everyday, it plumps my lips (full lips screams youth ladies) and this has an added breath freshen bonus!

If it's a special occasion I will add the white/silver eye liner to inside lid and black bold waterproof mascara as well as a little dramatic eyeshadow and lip stain under the Lip Shine, to the above regimen.

secret: I am 36 but this is really all I do and I am told I look 24 at the oldest, I even get carded! SO less is more and fantastic when it comes to make up.

As for the deodorant in a pinch on your face -NEVER- there are so many chemicals in it that are harmful to the delicate skin on your face and clogging to your T zone...that is THE WORST tip I have ever heard!
Instead: take a piece of tissue paper or toilet paper if your in that much of a pinch and blot, simple and your face won't fall off due to exposure to bht in two years.

lol some people's comments are funny, they didn't say rub your ENTIRE face with deodorant, first only in a dire need and dab just under the eye and t-zone, get a grip. As for the other tips, not bad, not too interested in the wet look eye lashes...sexy?

      nice tips :-)
      thank you
    • FuzzyOrangeKitten05  •  4 months ago
Yeah, right! Clumped up eyelashes look ugly. Also, you shouldn't put deodorant anywhere near your eyes. I'm starting to wonder if the author put these tips up here so that regular people would look bad, and celebrities would look great.
      • Christine 4 months ago
You are correct. Most deoderants contain aluminum hydroxide. Not only can it do eye damage but it is extremely drying, making any flaws or wrinkles look worse. It also clogs the pores - it may dry you up momentarily but the permanent eye damage and the break-outs from the clogged pores are hardly worth that brief period of time. That was horrible advice.

And that is a REALLY OLD, REALLY BAD, JOKE
    • Ginny  •  Stuart, Florida  •  4 months ago
the tips on here were not all that great. I dont put mascara on only because I rub my eyes a lot which ends up messing with the eyeliner. I have sensitive skin so i wouldnt dare put deoderant on my face. Give me something I can use.

Funny how this poster thinks wet clumped lashes are sexy. Whatever..........I think it looks stupid
      • Alane 4 months ago
yes, clumpy lashes are out. somebody forgot to tell them I guess. I suppose it is like clothes styles anymore, anything goes.
      • Melanie 4 months ago
I'm a kid of the eighties....clumpy eyelashes scream Tammy Faye to me. I can't stand them.
    • Sweet Pea  •  10 months ago
I don't find clumped together wet looking lashes attractive. Plus, you'd look weird walking around with wet lashes all day, people would probably wonder if you've been crying or just figure you're crappy at applying mascara.
    • Maryam  •  10 months ago
you know who wants wet clumpy looking lashes??? nobody.
    • Jill  •  10 months ago
deodorant is made to clog pores! (sweat comes out of pores)
DO NOT put it on your face!
    • Roger H  •  10 months ago
How about this for the younger crowd? Quit using so much eyeliner! We know where your eyes are, and the raccoon look is not attractive. Tuck the thong in while you're at it, too. Everyone has seen a few hundred. We realize you are a big girl and wear big girl undies.
