'What’s Your Nude' Campaign Calls for Bras of All Skin Tones

If you're not a woman with light skin you've probably noticed that finding a "nude" bra that matches your skin tone is a difficult task. While some mass chains and brands like Target, Kmart, and WonderBra do offer brown bras, for many stores their only flesh-tone options are pale pink or tan shades that certainly won't work for the entire population.

A new Facebook campaign called "What's Your Nude?" is unifying women who are tired of the lack of diversity in bra manufacturing and urging them to contact retailers and request representation for all skin tones in the marketplace. African-American psychologist and consumer Tara Raines started the campaign after years of frustrated lingerie shopping. She recently discovered her friends and family have been dyeing beige bras at home to create darker colors that match their skin.

"I don't think it's too much to ask that bra makers include darker hues when manufacturing their collections," Raines said in a press release. "Women of color deserve to look and feel sexy, and a big part of that is looking like ourselves."

Raines also noted that manufacturers willing to take on this unrepresented portion of the market would be very successful. "Women of color have tremendous spending power in the U.S. and it's absurd to think that in 2012 we are essentially disenfranchised when they shop for lingerie," said Raines. "It's my hope that this campaign will drive not only awareness, but swift action by bra makers."

Has she gotten your attention? Here are a few ways you can participate in the "What's Your Nude?" campaign, which will run throughout the month of February:

-"Like" their Facebook page, facebook.com/morebrownbras
-Follow the campaign at twitter.com/whatsyournude and spread the word by using the #WhatsYourNude hash tag
-Contact your preferred bra manufacturer or bra retailer via phone, email, social media or snail mail and let them know "nude" is not just one color

If know of any brands that carry brown bras (or any other flesh tones) let us know in the comments and we'll be sure to relay the info to Tara Raines.

It's also important to note that it's not just bras that need a serious revamp. Items like Spanx, panties, concealer, foundation, band-aids, and even heels are dubbed "nude" when they often only cater to a specific light skin tone. Let's hope the fashion and beauty industries take notice and continue to diversify!
