    9 Chic Shoe Rules

It's no secret that women adore shoes. When you are blue, buying a new pair is an instant mood lifter. When you feel great, you make a trip to the shoe store in celebration. And on special occasions, you must have something special to wear. The truth is, there will always be a good excuse to add to your shoe closet. Here are 9 tips on expressing your personal style - through your footwear.

    1. Don't Be Hobbled by Discomfort Even if you love a pair, if you can't walk in them, don't buy them. Limping around in heels is decidedly ungraceful.

    2. Dare to Wear Brights An electric hue can amp up a look, including outfits in colors other than black and denim. Try colored shoes with white, khaki, and pastels. A scarlet-red dress, however, calls for neutral footwear.

    3. Wear What's Appropriate Open-toe sandals may be too risqué for a conservative suit, while a flat may be too casual for a cocktail frock. Keep your sneakers relegated to gym clothes or casual jeans. When in doubt, it's hard to go wrong with a classic black pump.

    4. Going Outdoors? Say No to Stilettos
Photo Credit: Studio DPhoto Credit: Studio D It will be difficult to walk when your heels keep sinking into the ground, and you'll ruin your shoes. Flats are fine, but if you want height, wedges are an ideal option.

    5. Make a Statement
A spindly stiletto sandal is all about looking sexy, while a bow-emblazoned kitten heel veers more toward cute. Know what look you're going for, and go full out.

    6. Va-va-voom Shoes Have Their Place
Nighttime is the right time for attention-getting shoes. If you still want to wear a knock-'em-dead look during the day, choose a closed-toe or peep-toe pump.

    7. Pair Sky-High Shoes with Tame Hemlines When going for major air, keep your hemlines at an inch above the knee. But when wearing a short skirt or dress, wear a lower heel or flat - it will balance you out and keep you from showing altogether too much leg.

Photo Credit: Studio DPhoto Credit: Studio D8. Wear Flats with Properly Hemmed Clothes Make sure your clothing is tailored or you'll risk looking sloppy. A trouser leg should fall at or above the ankle, while skirts or dresses should end above the knee.

    9. Think About Balance
(And we're not talking about the kind you need to walk.) A thicker-heeled shoe grounds a heavily layered look, when something dainty could look off balance. The reverse also holds true. When wearing a wispy frock, a thin-strapped sandal is an appropriate match.

I'm from Planet Merrell. Before I found them, I had a heckuva time finding anything to fit my size 9 1/2 wide feet. Heels are out for me. Some other species wear them well, but can't walk in them. What's the point?

OMG. You know, I've been wearing heels for years - and I've also worn the comfort shoes. Sorry. I have two pair of workboots (Doc's and a pair of timberlands), 2 pair of mocs (Minnetonka's) and the rest are heels - all 200 pair. Boots, sandles, blah...blah..blah. I could run in them - just made sure they were perfectly comfortable when I tried them on. Made sure I could walk in them, and I work in NYC.
Look for the 50 year old wearing the most awesome shoes you can find down in soho - that's me.

Wow, guess I'm an exception when it comes to being a shoe fan.
I don't see the reason to buy so many shoes; one pair of each is good enough as it is.
Black goes great with everything, so no need to look around much.
Also, I suck at high heels.

I used to wear high heels every single day at my old job. Now I work where it is not necessary. I can wear sneakers or even SLIPPERS to work if I wanted to. Jeans or sweatpants, too. I'm not one for the 'nightlife', so I don't necessarily need heels for that, either. I guess I've gotten too used to this because you could no longer talk me into a pair of heels if you paid me to wear them. I've gotten too comfy with my current situation!

The ankle is *WAY* to short to hem your trousers, unless they're super skinny jeans. For the best look hem them to the base of the upper - where the sole of the shoe and the upper meet. Then they won't look like you stole your grandma's clamdiggers and you can wear them with any height of shoe and not look silly. Or better yet, decide ahead of time whether you will wear flats or heels with a pair of pants and have them hemmed accordingly. There's nothing wrong with longer pants, particularly if you're under 35 - you just don't want them breaking a lot and looking sloppy in the front, or dragging in the back.

Don't wear wedges for outdoors if you have weak ankles like me! That's just asking for trouble, OW

"Even if you love a pair, if you can't walk in them, don't buy them". What are they talking about? You buy them no matter what! That's the beauty of it!

Uhhh I disagree with a few of these! A chunky heel or platform can be just the right touch to a dainty/girly dress. "Mix Match" is very in you just need to know how to do it right!

mm i love heels, but i wont wear them if they are short ill just opt for a wedge that doesnt look tall but still give me the height

I firmly believe that a heal should be polite and discretely sex. It should get along with everyone. It should be a pleasant neutral shade with good curves. It absolutely needs to be comfortable enough to walk a mile in pavement if necessary or stand up in for several hours. It should also be on clearance or sale if possible.

I love me a sexy heal, but I don't have tons of money to be throwing around, so if it doesn't meet those criteria it is out. A beautiful yellow pump that I can't wear with jeans or slacks or a dress does me no good.
