Everyday we are bombarded with advertisements of skin care products claiming to do wonders for our complexion and overall being. While I am not saying that these skin care products do or do not work, I feel that I can not bring myself to spend X amount of dollars on a skin care product that may or may not work.

Most skin care products today advertise natural ingredients such as green tea, oatmeal exfoliate, aloe Vera, Vitamins A, B, C. Usually the amounts of the natural ingredients in skin care products are minimal. For instance if you read the label, the ingredients listed at the top are the most prevalent and the ingredients towards the bottom are the least prevalent in the product. When buying that expensive skin care product, read the label, how much of that so called natural ingredient are you really purchasing?

There are other alternatives such as making your own skin care products. Skin toners which restore pH balance and easy to make are 100% natural. Toners can be made from chamomile, green tea, basil, etc, and customized to your specific skin type.

Facial masks, peels, and exfoliates are simple to make from common kitchen ingredients such as eggs, honey, oatmeal and cornmeal. Herbal infusions and/or essential oils can be added to customize the recipe for your skin type.

Next time you are shopping for a skin care miracle product, consider a homemade skin care recipe. The benefits of making your own products are: knowing what you are placing on your skin, truly natural ingredients, inexpensive, eco-friendly because they are natural, fun.
