A TRUE, healthy guide to Long Hair

I recently read an article on Shine with numerous, false claims on how to grow hair long and fast. You CAN grow long hair. But fast should never be associated with it. Long, beautiful hair takes time, patience and most of all a good diet.

1) Wash your hair every other day: If you can stand it! The harmful chemicals from shampoos and conditioners can sometimes be worse for your hair than better. You're also not ripping out unnecessary strands by combing your wet hair every day. Also, you'll be doing less damage in the long-run because you're not heat-styling your hair daily.

2) Take vitamins: I highly recommend a vitamin called "Hair, Skin and Nails". I buy it at Walmart. It has extra protein, biotin and collagen to make every part of you radiant. A COMMON MISCONCEPTION: Taking prenatal vitamins. If you are NOT pregnant, those can be very harmful to your body. They are meant to provide mothers-to-be with extra vitamins. And these extra vitamins can hurt you, because a non-pregnant woman doesn't need more iron or potassium. You'd be basically overdosing yourself. Pregnant women grow hair faster because they are PREGNANT, not because of their vitamins. As always, check with your physician before you start on any vitamin regiment.

3) Deep Condition: Now I'm kind of a freak about this. It's SO healthy for your hair to do it. Some women have more oily hair, or dry, so you'll have to figure out your own dosage and regiment, but it's worth it! I use all-natural coconut oil (I buy it from Whole Foods or Green Acres Market). It starts out all hard, like wax, and melts in your hand. Work it into clean, wet hair and let set for about an hour. Wash out and voila! Beautiful, shiny hair! There's a lot of other conditioners out there that can give your similar results, but this is the cheapest and most healthy for your hair because it's all-natural, no chemicals.

4) Brush with a wide-tooth comb: When you get out of the shower, your hair is all nasty tangled, right? Well, when you use your regular brush you are just ripping out unnecessary strands. If you use a wide-tooth comb, you save your hair the torture. Plus you can easily clean and disinfect your comb so you're not constantly putting old, dirty hair oil back on your scalp.

5) Let your hair breathe: Try not to wear your hair up each day. And if you must wear your hair back, use styles they are looser, so you're not choking your strands! Maybe try wearing your hair down when your go to bed.

6) Trim your hair regularly: - Your hair needs to stay healthy and by trimming the ends, you are giving your hair room to grow.

7) Eat healthy: Beautiful hair grows from the inside out. So instead of eating that Big Mac, maybe opt for an orange...or something. Who am I kidding? This is the hardest thing for me! ha

Good luck on your hair growing voyage! It can be really irritating, because your hair goes through "awkward stages". But as anybody will tell you, BE PATIENT. And in the end, you'll be really satisfied!
