They are back, and with a vengeance. Those black and white striped Adidas shower slides, originally meant for easing soccer star's hot and tired post-game dogs, had a fashion moment in the 90s and now they have re-emerged as one of summer's trendiest sandals.

Speaking with the blog Fashionista, New York City stylist Danielle Nachmani explained the fad, "There has been this great moment of mixing high end designer pieces with athletic shoes and moving to an athletic sandal just seems like the most obvious transition for spring/summer," Nachmani said. "They have all the cool girl, F--- you 'tude of Nikes or New Balances, but without all the foot sweat."

Always ahead of the curve, fashions models have been tossing off their platform stilettos between photo shoots and easing their aching tootsies into the nubby version. For better or worse, the humble shower shoe also gained attention when starlet-turned-bad girl Amanda Bynes posted an Instagram of herself wearing them with sweats, gym socks, and a cavernous gold leather handbag by Louis Vuitton.

Even on the runway, some designers have featured the low-key slides with their spring lines. In her 2014 resort collection, which launched on Monday, New York City-based, British designer Misha Nonoo paired her graphic, modern, warm-weather looks with both Adidas sandals as well as black and white soccer shoes.

"I'm so happy to see them come back," she tells Yahoo! Shine. "Lots of people still have them in the back of their closets. I like to kick off my heels after a long day at work and wear them around the office."

Nonoo says that it's part of a trend in wearing idiosyncratic and unexpected accessories. "There is something inconsistent about pairing a shower slippers with beautiful and feminine clothing, but for my collection it really worked because the clothes are very linear." She also says that having a huge Adidas store right across the street from their Soho offices sparked her stylist's imagination when they were putting together the final looks for the collection a few weeks ago.

Her advice for wearing the sandals with feminine spring and summer clothing is "be as quirky as possible, if your outfit feels a little off, you are probably wearing them just right."

If you just want to dip your toe into the edgier style, Yahoo! Shine's senior Fashion and Beauty editor, Joanna Douglas, also has some ideas for outfits that are totally wearable but won't leave you looking like you were on your way to the locker room.

"You could pair them with a black cotton mini or maxi dress and shiny, metallic accessories," she says. "Or for a more street-style look, try cutoffs, an armful of bracelets, and a fancy sweatshirt or graphic tee." She also says they would work well with brightly colored ankle-length jeans and a loose, simple, white top.
