Alternative Beauty: Make a Condiment into a Conditioner

Sometimes the best beauty products aren't in the aisles of Sephora, but in your kitchen. Welcome to a new TGIBD feature I am calling Alternative Beauty, where I will subject myself to a variety of homemade beauty treatments and remedies and report back. This week, a favorite sandwich ingredient doubles as a deep conditioning treatment.

Mayonnaise, which, in its purest form, is simply a combination of egg yolks, oil and vinegar, has long been rumored to be a highly effective conditioner. And while there are beauty versions of the remedy-Sally Beauty sells something called Silk Elements Hair Mayonnaise Treatment-I wanted the real stuff. So I bought a jar-I opted for Trader Joes organic variety, versus Hellmans to avoid any extra additives-and gave it a go.

After scooping the mayo out of the jar and combing it through my dry hair, all the while resisting the urge to add salt and pepper, I covered my head with a plastic shower cap (saran wrap will also work) I swiped from a hotel and let my condiment conditioner do its stuff for about fifteen minutes. The smell, I will admit, is a bit nauseating. Then, I washed out my mayonnaisey hair with shampoo, which eliminated the smell and got rid of any oily residue on my scalp. Drying my hair, I immediately noticed a difference-my ends didn't feel as parched as they usually are, and my hair was shinier all over. While you will definitely get the same result after a fancy deep conditioning treatment at the salon, a jar of mayo costs a lot less than a jar of Kerastase.

For all you mayo-phobes out there, check out this new overnight treatment from salon-favorite, Kerastase.

If you don't like the smell, try simply oil (olive, almond, hazelnut, avocado or whatever flavour of kitchen oil) on your hair, It works as well as mayonnaise and the smell is better.

My boyfriend told me I smelt like a sandwich Lo. Results? My hair didn't fall out afterward and I didn't turn into a sandwich. I REALLY just need a hair cut, my split ends didn't magically disappear. Maybe I'll try it again after the hair cut.

I've always wanted to try it, but for some reason I chickened out. This is the ultimate motivation... Thanks♥

Just curious as to how often the mayo treatment is recommended? Maybe weekly or monthly?

This does work very well. Also Coconut Oil works beautifully on the hair and on the skin. It's all natural, organic and I cook with it as well.

I use Kraft Mayo, I put some in bowl, microwave it for 10 seconds to warm it up and get it oily, put it on my hair with a plastic cap for 20 minutes, wash my hair, wrap it, sit under the dryer and the after results are amazing! ive been doing this for years, its cheap and i love it!

I just love homemade skin care products. They are inexpensive to make and so beneficial to the skin. Also you dont have to skimp on use as you would with an expensive department store product. For instance, a simple cleanser is:

      Gentle Facial Cleanser
1/2 cup oatmeal or cornmeal and plain yogurt
(add enough yogurt to form a paste)
Mix ingredients to form a paste. With your fingertips and in an upward circular motion, gently massage the paste into your skin. Rinse with warm water and then apply a toner and moisturizer.

Not only are homemade skin care products inexpensive they are definetly less harmful to the environment when rinsed off.

You guys... I will admit that it is nasty as hell! BUT the results are awesome if you do it right. I also use Olive Oil as well. :D

Haha, that is so gross...But my hair has been an absolute mess lately. MAYBE I can psych myself into trying it lol.

To Charlie's Angel, you can use oil (any edible type except carrot oil) on natural hair or colored hair (whatever the color is). In fact, many commercial products made to protect your hair have oil inside.

And I use the Oil treatment weekly (I've got long extra-dry hair), combined with the coffee ground trick learned here against dandruff.

      Very cheap and very efficient.

Mayo is also great for shining up plant leaves (a dab on a paper towel and wipe the leaves). Love those home remedies!!!

Yeah, I have tried before and it really works, leaves my curly long hair shiny and soft..Also olive oil works great, and coconut milk is excellent as well, it makes my hair shinier than any expensive product, and smells delicious...I always like to try natural homemade treatments for my hair and skin, most of them work great and are really cheap!!

It worked really well it is lighter then a hot oil treatment and after I washed it out it didn't smell like mayo at all.It also doesn't weigh my hair actually it feels lighter then usual.I'm definatly going to use it again
