    Kate Somerville

Though you'd never guess it by looking at her, Kate Somerville has been in the skin-care business for more than 15 years. When it comes to complexion perfection, the poreless princesses of Los Angeles frequent the hallowed halls of this skin care sensei. The creator and director of her eponymous clinic and product line is known for her amazing ability to impart glowing, gleaming skin to legions of leading ladies. Here, Somerville discusses her own facial regimen, what beauty habit drives her batty, and all you need to know to transition your face when the leaves change.

ELLE: What do we need to keep in mind skin-care wise when prepping for fall?
Kate Somerville: Chillier weather dries out the outer layers of the skin, making it feel tight and flaky.

You need to adjust your skin care to accommodate the changing climate. No matter your skin type, it's important to deliver water to the cells and then seal it in. If you're oily or acne-prone, make sure that the serums you use are water based, and look for oil-free moisturizers. Those with dry skin should exfoliate regularly, as dry skin is the result of dead skin cells.

ELLE: Regarding exfoliants-should we get physical or opt for chemical iterations?
KS: Both. It's just about finding the right product for your skin type. For really sensitive skin, look for a smooth, soft jojoba bead and opt for lactic acid and enzymes. Those with oily skin should use a coarser, larger bead (avoid shells or pits, which can be sharp), and use stronger chemicals like salicylic and glycolic acid. Fruit enzymes, like those from pineapple or papaya, are also a great chemical exfoliant. Exfoliate about twice per week with a product containing both physical and chemical exfoliants like ExfoliKate.

ELLE: Which facial masks are best for use in cooler weather?
KS: If your skin is dry, try a hydrating mask to soothe and restore water and moisture to the complexion.

ELLE: What's most rewarding about your job?
KS: The best part of my job is changing people's lives by changing their skin. It's not just skin to me. Transforming skin is what gives me my mojo, and it's why I do what I do. I'm inspired by the pure potential in someone's skin, and I love a challenge!

ELLE: What is the worst skin-care habit?
KS: Not wearing sunscreen. It's so important. Many clients walk in my door and ask me to take away or reverse something they don't like that could have been avoided by simply staying out of the sun!

ELLE: Tell us about your own skin care regimen!
KS: I cleanse daily and exfoliate a couple of times a week. I use Dermal Quench Liquid Lift Advanced Wrinkle Treatment, a moisturizer and sunscreen. I like to wear mineral makeup for sun protection, too.
