Celebrity recession: Getting their hands on freebies at all costs

Frederick M. Brown/Getty ImagesFrederick M. Brown/Getty ImagesTimes are tough for, well, most of us, and any major fashion purchases have been put on hold for more important and pressing issues like affording our homes, food and other daily necessities. But what happens when you're a famous celebrity in the public eye and can no longer afford the luxurious designs you not only covet, but are expected to possess? You borrow them! Only, for some stars, borrowing has no return policy.

Last week, singer/actress/ entrepreneur/millionaire Jennifer Lopez was said to be guilty of such a crime. She borrowed $50,000 of diamonds for a Beverly Hills fashion launch she attended, and assumed the jewels were hers to keep, but no such luck. "We received a call from [her manager] Benny Medina, informing us that Jennifer was going to keep the jewelry," says an insider. "As far as Mr. Mouawad [the jeweler] is concerned, Jennifer can have whatever she wants, but a premature demand seemed presumptuous."

Lopez's manager said she'd been promised the diamonds, but that was yesterday, when businesses used to be able to write off freebies. In this economy, fashion houses can't afford to part with high-end items or offer them up for Golden Globe goodie bags.

A-listers, don't worry if you're caught by paparazzi slumming it in normal people outfits with a little less bling-we understand. We're all cutting back, and watching you do the same might actually be endearing. [NY Post]

I think it's really selfish that she assumed she could keep the jewels just because she's famous.

Wake up, America! Celebs get freebies because everybody is watching them, because everybody considers them idols! We all watch TV, we read stupid tabloid magazines, we do everything we can to find out everything we can about them. We created this situation. And what for? Because they make movies or sing on stages? Yeah, that's awesome, we should all worship them for that. By the nature of their profession, they get out there for everybody to see them, but that doesn't mean that their work is the most important or meaningful to this society. As someone else said above, what about teachers, doctors, fire fighters, people that save lives??? No respect for them, but we're all star struck when we see a celebrity and we feel that we've seen a glimpse of heaven. So they played in a movie... SO WHAT????? WAKE UP, PEOPLE!

If we didn't care as much, they wouldn't get all the freebies that they do, because companies wouldn't think it's worth it. But as long as we just consume everything that we're being served, as far as the entertainment industry goes, things will not change.

what makes jennifer think she's so special that she can keep thousands of dolars worth of jewerly, she has millions in the bank , she can certaintly afford to buy whatever she wants. i wish i had her bank account

JLo shouldn't keep the 50,000 jewelry. She should return it with no expectations. She can totally afford to buy jewelry for the red carpet. Hey there is nothing wrong with wearing something more than once...She has so much to begin with. Mix and match honey...We won't criticize you for wearing something twice. Real women do it all the time...

Poor JLo...she'll have to adjust her jewelry budget. What a hoot and what a great example of how assumption/entitlement does not equal class. I'll be laughing during my one dinner this week where I can afford to add meat to the menu. :)

BWAHAHA...that's not embarassing! If anybody's getting freebies, it shouldn't be multi-millionaires.
    • texas flower  •  3 years 2 months ago
There is a reason why they are "rich" or millionaires, they get everything for free. I would be rich to if I never had to spend a dime on anything. I think all of us should try going into stores and see if we can get free stuff. All of us would be asking for bail money later!

I have to agree...why are these multi-millionaries (for one movie)being given thousands of dollars in merchandise; especially in the amounts that some people make in a year or more than some make in a year. Celebs snap back to reality.

Wow I guess J.lo isn't jenny from the block anymore! Yeah when she found out the jewelery wasn't hers, she should've just gave it back! I don't see how she earned it! there are teachers firefighters policemen who get paid much much much less than her and they DO deserve it more than her what movies are more important than saving lives! I mean making some movies and several cd's doesn't mean you've earned it!
The pressures of her job might not be easy, but that doesn't mean she's earned the right to jewelery either! I'd like to see her work 40+ hours at a factory and go in with a cold or flu the whole week and have bosses that don't give a crap and have back problems and a heart condition(my hubby does, and doesn't get exepensive jewelery for it) and then she can say she's earned it her life has been easy for the last i dunno 12+ years. Instead of demanding free jewelery she should donate money to some of the poor people of the bronx since she is still jenny from the block err wait... she's not anymore!

I'm sure she isn't the only one that does this kinda crud in hollywood or where ever all the big celebs are. I mean what about the babysitters (the good ones anyways, not criminals) & babysitters don't get paid crap (because no one can afford too!) but they've definately earned it more than j.lo so what she's got one kid big deal even 2 try working at a daycare center with 30 kids in a class, Plus I know she has a nanny most likely to take care of those kids! and probably a maid too. I don't even Own that amount in jewelery total let alone one set of necklace earrings & ring!

that's a crock celebs who can buy anything they want get freebies where people who can't afford anything living on the streets get squat. How ridiculous is that. I have no respect for any celeb who expects freebies they should remember where they came from or be considerate of those who's luck isn't that great.

I do agree its presumptuous to do what she did. Too bad, a celebrity like her being admired and looked up to, could turn out like that. Maybe that's the price of fame, they become greedy. Behind the bright and sparkle is a different persona.
With the state of economy at this time happening around the world, its purely insensitive of her. I'm disappointed, truly.

I can't stand Jennifer Lopez. She seems so full of herself to me.

Most of us can't get a free sucker at the bank anymore, why should JLo feel like she can keep $50k worth of jewelry. It's not like she doesn't have jewelry. Geez...
    • JADE  •  3 years 2 months ago
What about those of us that buy name brand cloths? We are advertising aren't we? But we don't get "freebies" hell we barely get a discount from a sale. I never understand why the free crap always goes to those that can afford to buy. This is a screwed up world we live in, the rich get richer and poor get poorer.

the jeweler will just pass the costs on the next "real" customers... another reason to think she's a waste of space
    • A Yahoo! User  •  3 years 2 months ago
Free jewelry? For her? OMG, the world has gone nuts. She can buy anything she wants! Or her husband! Get real J.Lo, or you will lose even more fans. What about your fans? Your fans are losing their jobs, their homes, even more, their kids. Yes, their kids. There are people in California putting their kids into foster care because they have lost their jobs and their homes and cannot care for them. What if that happened to you, Jennifer? Have you not thought about that? Of course not, you freaking has been. Thank you for hearing my rant.

Ok, first of all, yeah, she doesn't get to keep what isn't hers. THat's stealing. BUT as far as the freebies for the celebs go, they've earned it. Really. They are walking billboards and advertisements because everybody (ok, almost everybody) pays attention to what they do, where they go and what they wear. I'd love to have $50K of jewels just given to me, but I haven't earned them in the sense that nobody writes blogs or articles about me, I don't go to red carpet events, make movies, or make the tabloids. I am not a walking commercial. J-Lo, Jolie, Alba, etc., are. If they get the freebies, fine, they earned them. It's called advertising, like it or not. I am not entitled to freebies just because someone else is.
