Frederick M. Brown/Getty ImagesTimes are tough for, well, most of us, and any major fashion purchases have been put on hold for more important and pressing issues like affording our homes, food and other daily necessities. But what happens when you're a famous celebrity in the public eye and can no longer afford the luxurious designs you not only covet, but are expected to possess? You borrow them! Only, for some stars, borrowing has no return policy.
Last week, singer/actress/ entrepreneur/millionaire Jennifer Lopez was said to be guilty of such a crime. She borrowed $50,000 of diamonds for a Beverly Hills fashion launch she attended, and assumed the jewels were hers to keep, but no such luck. "We received a call from [her manager] Benny Medina, informing us that Jennifer was going to keep the jewelry," says an insider. "As far as Mr. Mouawad [the jeweler] is concerned, Jennifer can have whatever she wants, but a premature demand seemed presumptuous."
Lopez's manager said she'd been promised the diamonds, but that was yesterday, when businesses used to be able to write off freebies. In this economy, fashion houses can't afford to part with high-end items or offer them up for Golden Globe goodie bags.
A-listers, don't worry if you're caught by paparazzi slumming it in normal people outfits with a little less bling-we understand. We're all cutting back, and watching you do the same might actually be endearing. [NY Post]
