Celebs' Pre-Oscar Beauty Prep: More Botox this year, in more ways than you want to know

Getty ImagesGetty ImagesThe Academy Awards are this weekend, and, in addition to writing acceptance speeches, planning elaborate outfits and coordinating their makeup and hair, the actresses who'll walk Sunday's red carpet (or, possibly, just be seen inside), have also been working on creating camera-ready skin-in some cases, for months.

While most A-list celebs won't cop to indulging in cosmetic procedures, the country's top dermatologists suggest that pre-awards-show work is more common than these women are letting on. In fact, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 2009 marks a 25 percent increase in requests for pre-Oscar non-surgical cosmetic procedures such as injectables (like Botox), lasers treatments, and peels. (Interestingly, the trend is not limited to the stars themselves-celeb spouses, and behind-the-scene people like agents, publicists, producers, cinematographers, musicians, and party hosts are also going in for a wrinkle-erasing needle here and there.)

Getty ImagesGetty Images"Actresses have the same problems with their faces that the rest of the world have," says Dr. David Goldberg, a Manhattan dermatologist who has treated top actresses pre-red carpet. "But even fine lines show up really well when you're under lights and in front of cameras."

Goldberg says that while peels and laser treatments are popular skincare services two months out, the most common face rejuvenator is Botox, which patients come in for two to three weeks before the show. And they come in for a lot of Botox, he explains, in places you might not imagine. Celebs now request the injections not only to create their weirdly smooth, waxen foreheads; but for areas like the the tip of the nose (Botox can slightly shorten its length, which makes for a more becoming profile) and in the nose's bridge to correct "bunny lines," the tiny wrinkles that show up when one scrunches the face.

Another sought-after pre-Oscars procedure is armpit Botox, which can keep a recipient from sweating for up to six and a half months. "Awards shows make people incredibly nervous and sometimes they sweat profusely," says Goldberg. "They need to be able to raise their arms in those gowns."

So who* exactly is going under the needle? Goldberg won't reveal his client list (we tried, believe us, we tried), but some dermatologists estimate 99 percent of Hollywood have at least sampled a cosmetic procedure.

"This is a group that is so crazed about wrinkles, so concerned with their profiles. They get nervous and they come in," says Goldberg.

*Last December, the world of tabloids started wondering if Angelina Jolie was "addicted to Botox." We don't know, but her forehead sure looks smooth.

*Nicole Kidman has denied ever having Botox injections. Hmmm.

Jennifer, I am so glad I am not a celebrity. Screw Botox! Injecting toxins into my face is NOT my idea of beauty. I'll stick with the wrinkles when I get 'em, lol!

Wendy, Botox stands for Botulinum Toxin A. Botox procedures are fairly safe, but it is still a toxin. No thanks, I will take my chances with trying to take care of my skin from an early age. My mom is 50, and she barely has any wrinkles, so maybe genetics is on my side (for something anyway, lol).

I agree with other readers on here...years from now they'll be tons of people with weird side effects from all that Botox.
Whatever happened to the Classic hollywood glamour of the 20's- thru the 50's?
Now Those were some beautiful ladies and No botox was needed.

Were you trying to make a point Jennifer?
In the real world ppl get botox all the time i.e job interviews,to have more confidence, feel good about themselves-stop excessive sweating, migraine headaches, I'm sure there are a couple more. So please stop belittling something you know nothing about.
      Sounds like you're a YENTA.

My cousin saaid she gets BOTOX for sinus problems? Told me I should try it, but hey is botox made out of some poison? I'll stick to sinus meds that don't work for now. Maybe someday I'll give in, but not now. Good article though. Kidman is really pale though and always has been, I've never seen her tan, and they say wrinkles are caused by sun damage so maybe she is telling the truth, who knows.

samx, yes, I am well aware that there are many chemicals and toxins in medicine. Hence, I go the naturopathic route unless I absolutely have to take some conventional form of pharmaceutical. I pretty much have to feel like I am dying. Happens about once every 5 years. Everyone has their "thing", right?

Wow, thanks Jennifer for reporting that!! It's sad, why can't women age gracefully?

Thanks Jeffifer - I keep forgetting that you have to write about these things, but sometimes they come out on the negative side.
Biscuit - did you know that a lot of medicine is toxic, ie, Coumadin for one, and some others that come from South America or mold for Penicillin.

Botox schmotox! I'll stick with Oil of Olay and hope for the best...Besides, when I'm 87 I don't believe I'll want to look like I am 20...I'll be too old to care!

Trust me, if they had these procedures back then in Hollywood
they would have used them. I watched a documentary on Strippers
from back in the day and was surprised to see how many of them
died from compications of breast implants. There has always
been something and there always will be.

      Samx,

I was doing my job, which is reporting on fashion and beauty news. When you are a writer and you read that there's been a significant increase in pre-Oscar cosmetic procedures (and the Oscars are coming up), you write about it.

So, more celebrities are getting Botox and this is how they are getting it.

That is all I claim to know. As for being a YENTA, um, well, I read a lot of gossip and I guess I'm a busybody...
      maybe you got me there?

I love how the author comments on Angelina's forehead as if, at her age, it should be covered in wrinkles. She's in her early 30's, only a few years older than me, and to me looks a lot more her age than a lot of other women in Hollywood (ie Nicole Kidman... she's beginning to look too much like her Madame Tussauds wax figure). I'm 30 but don't look it and I don't use Botox. Some women actually age very gracefully while others just don't. Either way I do think that most people in Hollywood do try some kind of cosmetic procedure at least once.

For years I thought the very idea of Botox was just horrifying. I'm 30 now and things are going well in the skin department, but who knows and more importantly, who really cares.
Good for you if you're perfect, the rest of us would like to keep our options open.

      Jennifer,
Thanks for pointing out the fact that celebrities do have the same skin problems as the rest of us ie; blemishes, pimples, and skin discoloring. On that note I will add that they also undergo full body airbrushing to cover up those flaws!!!!!1
