Cindy Crawford Pulls Plug on 10-Year-Old Daughter’s Modeling Career

In a surprising about face, former supermodel Cindy Crawford says her daughter Kaia Gerber will need to wait until she's 17 to be a model. "At this point, she's too young to pursue a career. There aren't even a handful of jobs for a 10-year-old girl," Crawford told The Daily. Crawford was initially enthusiastic about her daughter's foray into modeling.

Gerber, who looks strikingly like her mother, was an overnight sensation when she modeled for Versace's new line of children's clothing in January 2011. On the shoot, Crawford says she didn't want to "...be a stage mom and make her nervous. She knew I was there looking out for her. She’s done little modeling things with me, but it was always with me, and this was just her. And I really wanted her to have that experience." She adds that she was surprised at how the quickly the images of her daughter wearing a cropped leather jacket and mini-skirt made headlines around the world. In a press release after the shoot, Donatella Versace said, "Like her mother, Kaia has a very special gift. The camera really, really loves her." At the height of her modeling days, Crawford was a muse for the fashion house's founder, Gianni Versace, who was tragically murdered in 1997.

Reportedly, Kaia isn't pitching a fit about mom's change of heart. According to Crawford, her daughter quipped, "I might model first because you don't have to know how to do anything, but then I want to be a baby nurse."

While Crawford didn't go into more detail about her decision, recently the mistreatment of underage models has been in the spotlight. The Council of American Fashion Designers asked its members to only use models over the age of 16 to strut the catwalks at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. After his show on Monday, February 13, 2012, designer Marc Jacobs was slammed in the press for knowingly sending a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old down the runway. Concerns range from younger girls being more susceptible to eating disorders to having their photographs taken while they change clothing for a photo shoot or fashion show.

Paulina Porizkova, another supermodel from Crawford's generation, has been outspoken about the abuse she says is endemic to the industry. In a new documentary on modeling called About Face, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month, Porizkova said that she and the other young models were so accustomed to inappropriate behavior from agents and photographers that, "What people called sexual harassment, we called compliments."

Do you think underage models should be banned? Let us know in the comments below.

the outfit and how she posed made her look like a young 13 yr old. her mother didnt like her daughter getting all the attention either.
    • D  •  Tampa, Florida  •  1 month 27 days ago
Not too young to model but DEFINATELY too young to model in that getup.

You wonder why there are way more pedophiles these days? Well it doesn't help to paint up 10 year olds like college chics in heat.
    • country girl  •  3 months ago
ler her enjoy her childhood, 10 years old is way too young to be a working model-she should be playing with Barbie Dolls and having sleepovers, not walking the runway, so kudos to Mom for realizing this
      • D 3 months ago
Playing with barbie dolls is the reason for the mess to beging with.

Country Girl, there are different kinds of models, not just those doing "the runway." There are clothes catalogues, commercials, etc. :)

At least she is smart enough to realize it, rather than most models who think posing and having eating disorders is "hard work".

Kudos to Cindy for letting her be a child for now. I thought the outfit she was wearing was way too bold and risky for a 10 yr old. We all make mistakes as parents and Cindy is a good mom for being wise about this. The mistake was the taste in clothing that her little girl was wearing. Now, if it was a decent and respectable kid's outfit, that would be different. The little girl is absolutley gorgeous like her mom and in time will still be a gorgeous model.

I am sure Cindy pulled out because all the advocates for exploited children helped solidify her decision.

Did the Lord tell MR. TD JAKES to pick MS. Houston, and remake Sparkle!!
Some are making MS. Houston a Joke! Boosting their personal fame and name ( Black People should boycott the movie). Enough!! of slick, people misusing us, and misguiding us. TD Jakes who this film belong to, did not begin 10 years ago (that's PR talk). When the remake of Sparkle film began MR. Jakes and them knew. MS. Houston was struggling with addiction. This was about the time Clyde Davis too got her to make the last LP she recorded a little over a year ago. No one helped her but instead put her in a situation of pressure. Public light, to benefit there ego's Both MR. Davis and Bishop TD Jakes. How do a man of God produce a secular movie ( SPARKLE) who SONY, picture bank rolled MR. Jakes with a 40 million dollar deal. Make a movie about a drug addicted singer, who die due to drug use. Serlect Whitney Houston as a lead in that movie. Now every one wants her last works; they blind sided her. To get her to perform WHEN SHE WAS NOT WELL!. As JESUS would say Vipers!!! And John of the Bible too would declare. What about the addicted people in TD Jakes Church, He manage for JESUS CHRIST how do you explain, the above choice. Did the Lord tell MR. TD JAKES to Pick MS. Houston and remake Sparkle!!

Hey Dance, what the hell is your problem, this rant has nothing to do with the topic. stop inhaling
    • FYI  •  3 months ago
It's not the modeling thats the problem...it's WHAT they are modeling in or the poses they are set up to do, that ARE the problem. When a kid poses in apropriate outfits for a "kid" & in poses that make them look like the kids they are portraying, theres nothing wrong with it. It's when they cross those boundaries that it becomes a problem.

Why would any parent, especially a mother, put their child out therer like this? When you put a mini skirt on a 10 year old girl, what message are you sending?

"Do you think underage models should be banned?"
Only if they make them up to look like they are 6-10 years older than they really are and set them out there for some pervert to drool over.
Sheesh! Do parents really let their little 10 year old girls go out into the world dressed like that? And do 10 year old girls need make-up artists and hair stylists to look like better 10 year olds?

Toddlers and Tiaras parents should be SHOT and HUNG! They're all a bunch of MORONS!
    • BadGoat  •  Santa Ynez, California  •  3 months ago
Great, let her be a child. But wasn't it Cindy and her husband who allowed her to model to begin with? Publicity is grand no matter how you get it.
    • Mick Smith  •  3 months ago
Fortunately Crawford has lots of money and has some options. Some children are the family breadwinners and the parents are the "managers." This is what upsets me, because it's exploitation and, in some cases, slavery. Certainly those who manufacture products for children want to use children in their advertising and that makes sense, but there should be strict guidelines about working hours and parental supervision when children are working. While a childhood modeling or acting career can pay for a child's college education later, some unscrupulous parents know ways to skirt the laws and steal every dime of the child's income. For example, a friend of mine toured as an actor in a production of ANNIE. The manager/mother can legally take "expenses." They would stay at the best hotels, the mothers would have their hair done at the hotel beauty salon, have all their meals delivered via room service. The kids ended up with nothing at the end of the tour.

this is as bad as toddlers and tiara's that show makes me sick. half of the kids dont even want to do it, its the parents who are all obsessed with it. if they like it so much then why dont they go model. besides this fact models give off the wrong body image to young girls today. they feel like they have to be super skinny and so perfect when in reality they are not perfect at all and have photo shop done to every one of their photos. this world is out of control with what is aloud to be done anymore. yes, lets make our toddlers and young children look like they are 20 so that all the perverts can get off to it i mean come on people dont you care about your children!

I am sure the intense criticism had something to do with this decision. And, from the daughter's quote - it is clear she should concentrate on her education.
    • alomaclee  •  Portland, Oregon  •  3 months ago
The fact is, though modeling can profit the model lots of money, it's a shallow pursuit. The fashion and cosmetics industries are shallow industries, and this superficiality affects all of society, not just the models. How many women out there are knocking themselves out to live up to an image they see in print? Then when their bodies age and youth has disappeared, they feel they no longer have value. It's not a healthy worldview. The fact that Cindy Crawford's daughter wants to be a baby nurse shows that maybe her mom is instilling deeper values in her daughter. Good for her!

I thought Cindy was pulling her daughter out of modeling because there were only "a handful of jobs for 10 year olds?"
