Naomi Watts in character on the set of While discussing her transformation into Princess Diana last summer, actress Naomi Watts revealed that there were moments on the set of Oliver Hirschbiegel's Diana biopic when she felt the "presence" of the late People's Princess. Now, in a new interview, the Oscar-nominated actress goes into more detail about her spiritual connection and slight obsession with the late royal, who happens to be this month's V.F. cover star.
"There were definitely moments when I felt Diana's presence-I dreamed about her a lot, too, and that's a first," Watts recalled in an interview with the Mail. "I kept wondering to myself: 'Would she have liked it?' So I found myself constantly asking for her permission to carry on. I had saturated myself with Diana and her life and I felt this enormous responsibility of playing this iconic woman."
It has previously been reported that Watts wore dresses from Diana's own wardrobe, studied with a voice coach to mimic her voice, worked to emulate her body language, and pored over her interviews-even going so far as to exercise while listening on an iPod to Diana'a infamous 1995 interview with Martin Bashir. Eerily, the actress said that during one workout in London, she unintentionally ended up jogging to Kensington Palace, the official residence of Princess Diana until her death in 1997.
"It felt like I was spending a lot of time with her," Watts told the Mail. "There was one particular moment when I felt her permission was granted. That won't sound right in print, I know." She added, "I think I became a little obsessed. I felt very connected to her. I was very relieved to leave her behind."
The Diana biopic chronicles the last two years of Diana's life and her secret romance with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan-the latter of which, coincidentally, is the focus of this month's V.F. cover story. Diana opens in theaters in the U.K. next month.
