Does Culture Influence the Way We Dress?

There's a new website on the internet dedicated to "Mexican" women with muffin tops. For those who don't know what a muffin top is, I'll give you a quick definition: it's the overhanging of flesh on top of a tight pair of jeans or skirt. The term "muffin top" is given because this overflow resembles a muffin top over the paper cup that encloses the bottom.

This website started a little over a month ago and is run by a man who goes by the name of "Muff." In the recent radio interview, Muff angered a lot of callers by dedicating the website strictly to Mexican women and generalizing the muffin top phenomenon, or whatever it is. Callers and the radio talk show hosts agreed that there are several women, not just Mexican, who wear clothes too tight for them.

One caller brought up the issue that it is up to individual women what they wear, while the talk show hosts argued that sometimes, culture can and will influence what we wear. I don't know what to say. As a Latina, I was quite offended with this website because there are tons of women out there who aren't Mexican with muffin tops. Yet, it would be silly of me to argue that our culture doesn't play a role in the way we dress ourselves.

What do you think? Do you think a website like this really captures how a culture molds a women's taste in fashion, or does each individual women really choose how she dresses and what she feels comfortable or beautiful in?
