Experts debate dangers of wearing popular sheepskin boots

Ugg AustraliaUgg AustraliaDespite the fact that Uggs and their many knockoff incarnations have long been considered a "fashion don't," lots of women love and continue to wear these suede and sheepskin boots all winter long. They're warm, they're cozy, they're easy to throw on with any outfit, they feel like slippers, and they're a celebrity favorite. Of course this makes the boots very appealing and popular, especially during chillier months. But are they actually good for your feet? Experts say no.

In a recent Daily Mail article, professionals spoke out about the health risks of wearing cheap, imitation Ugg boots. Dr. Ian Drysdale, the head of the British College of Osteopathic Medicine, said, "Because these boots are warm and soft, young girls think they are giving their feet a break. In fact, they are literally breaking their feet." Drysdale continued, "Their feet are slipping around inside. With each step, the force falls towards the inside of the foot and the feet splay. This flattens the arch and makes it drop. The result can be significant problems with the foot, the ankle, and ultimately, the hip."

Does the Ugg boot, which retails for $140 and up, really provide more support than its more affordable imitators? Dr. Rock Positano, Director of the Non-surgical Foot and Ankle Service for the Hospital for Special Surgery, sees no difference. "Whether they are real Uggs or fake Uggs, we're dealing with footwear that offers no substantial and necessary orthopedic support for the foot and the ankle." He has many clients come to him with complications from wearing Uggs and pseudo-Uggs. Dr. Jim Christina, a podiatrist and the Director of Scientific Affairs for the American Podiatric Medical Association says, "The knockoffs that have essentially no support probably would be worse than your traditional Ugg boot, but Uggs are not a great supportive type of a footwear. They call them comfort footwear."

BearpawBearpawAs far as either the Uggs or their imitators breaking women's feet, Dr. Christina thinks that's an overstatement, but warns that some women have to be very careful. "Everybody's feet are different," says Dr. Christina. "Some people have very stable feet that aren't going to flatten very much, some people have high-arched feet that can actually benefit from something that is absorbent and cushioning, and then some people have feet that flatten excessively. When you get into the latter category, yes, those people should not be doing prolonged walking in any type of footwear that doesn't provide good support." Dr. Positano, however, is anti-Ugg across the board. "Whether you have a high arch, or a flat arch, inherently there are issues. You have the support issue under the foot, and the fact that there's no support around the ankle joint or the Achilles tendon," says Dr. Positano. And when it comes to affecting children, young ladies, or mature women, he insists, "This type of shoe does not discriminate."

While Dr. Christina stressed that those with a proclivity to flattening arches would be the ones affected by wearing these shoes, both doctors are in agreement that prolonged walking, standing, and activity in Ugg-like boots could lead to both temporary and long-term problems. "It may manifest as a pain in the arch, the heel, or in their lower legs-some of the muscles have to function differently because they have to compensate for the lack of support," says Dr. Christina. As the boots place stress on the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bones, everyday use can cause long-term problems for wearers like bunions, hammertoes, arthritis, tendinitis, and issues with their Achilles tendon, knees, hips and lower back. "Most people don't develop the symptoms until the day after," says Dr. Positano. "When you're walking in them, they're comfortable." So should women stop wearing Uggs and Ugg knockoffs if they experience discomfort? "It's probably a prudent idea," says Dr. Positano, "because nine out of ten times these issues are caused by improper or inadequate foot and ankle support." Dr. Christina agrees that these types of aches and pains are a warning sign to stop wearing the boots and to look for something that provides more support.

They key is to use your sheepskin boots sparingly or when you know you won't be doing extensive walking or activity. Just as you shouldn't wear high heels for an extended period of walking or dancing, keep your Ugg boot wearing to a minimum. For casual wearers who are looking to reinforce their boots for safety, the doctors say that adding supportive insoles would be a great first step. [Daily Mail]

If your feet slide around inside your boots, the boots do not fit and you need a smaller pair. That's not rocket science. Uggs let your feet act the way nature intended. The idea that everyone needs an orthopedic support shoe at all times is just plain stupid. You will feel stress if your feel have been so coddled by modern footwear that they have never functioned properly. Look at how many centuries mankind managed to squeak by without orthopedics or even shoes of any kind. Look at all the tribes that still just wrap a bit of leather around each foot and run like the wind. This doctor has his head where the sun does not shine.

Besides warm type and UGG Australia sale universality, traditional short versions also are quick to match. The understated, still refined motif does present you with Ugg Bailey Button

      Triplet
a multitude of options around the attire. It really is relatively normal to determine young girls pair their spring skirts UGG Australia sale with these short variations. Also mature ladies or professional white-collars would really like to match their trusty ugg boots jeans with black or chocolate short models.

From 1913 to 1944 comic strip artist and writer George Harriman had a great time with a truly loopy feline and so did his audience. In 1963 Krazy Kat was launched as an animated television show. The plots were simple and fun. Ignatz mouse, always up to mischief, usually gets arrested by Officer Pupp thanks to the interfering star of the show. So what makes the Kat so Krazy? Well, she's in love with a mouse for a start. Secondly, she takes being conked on the noggin by a brick thrown by Ignatz as a sign of affection and devotion.air max shoes Love may hurt but a certain feline takes it a bit too far in my humble opinion.

Let me guess. They're made in Red China! seems that most of the shoes I see in shoestores nowadays-that aren't made in Brazil,Italy,Mexico,or Vietnam-are also made in Red China. want American-made? Pay a fortune for them, if you have the money. Otherwise, be satisfied with possible sweatshop-made shoes at Walmart,Target, or even Carnival and boy, your feet and legs will suffer! My fat aunt used to wear high heels and I knew she had to be hurting at the end of a long work day. Me? I'll settle for an old pair of Bass loafers or New Balance running shoes.

Jim, I sincerely apologize. I was not referring to your ideas and opinions at all. When I clicked the link, I was sent to the first page with a post written March 17. My comment was in reference to that post. I didn't ignore your ideas and opinions, suggest you were stupid or disagree with you. I never left page one, nor did I realize this would be posted in June, two thousand comments later, directly following yours. My adult daughter is an UGGs fan; I have no opinion one way or the other about the product. I believe in reviews, and never purchase anything without researching opinions. I do, however, have a low-tolerance level for blatant destruction of our language, thus my comment. My rudeness is just as offensive as what I read. Again, I apologize to you or anyone else I may have inadvertently offended.

so we shouldn't be walking around barefoot either than because when we're barefoot there's no heel or arch support. just sayin cause that's what it looks like it's saying.

They're UGLY, is that why they're called UGGS?
    • Lashelle J.  •  1 year 11 months ago
Well with any good shoe you can put in a new insole or orthotic if you need it. Uggs have a removable wool liner, and you could put a molded insole under that if you needed more support. I like my Uggs and my Skechers knock offs both. I am dealing now with a bone bruses or stress fracture in my right heel that I got in... good, name brand sneakers. So I don't know about this report...

I love the feel and warmth of the UGG's or the knockoffs. Well I am in a cast now because I have torn the ligaments in my feet. I only have 1 foot casted but it is miserable. Be careful

If you don't issues with your feet and presumably in good health including proportionate weight you can probably get away with Uggs or imitations BUT eventually you'll get out of bed one day and wonder why your feet are suddenly painful with the first step! Everyone needs variation and support for arches!

Ugg's aren't the only non supportive shoes out there, look at most Ballet flats.
Most of the shoes that are made for women and girls have no arch support and are completely flat inside. Look at most Ballet flats, cute but no arch support at all.
Which does harm your feet in the long run.
The symptoms of bad footwear can be back pain too.
One of my good friends was complaining of back pain, went back and forth to the chiropractor for months. The treatments would relieve her pain for awhile but by the next day she was hurting again. I asked her to go to a Red wing shoe store with me, she had her feet measured, got good supportive shoes that fit her right and guess what? Her back did not hurt her after that.

How on earth could humans have reached this stage of existence without arch supports?!?! So stupid, especially since barefoot running is gaining popularity. Scientists are finding that if you are barefoot, your feet absorb impact. How is different with no-support boots?
