Fashion crimes for real: Flint, MI police to start arresting people with saggy pants (we feel confused, sad, perhaps scared)

What an interesting world we live in. Apparently, in Flint, Michigan, the crime level/social atmosphere is such that Police Chief David Dicks has taken on the issue of man fashion, specifically how young gentlemen are wearing their trousers.
Dicks, it seems, finds low-riding or "saggy" pants indecent and he's found a law to back him up.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the police chief believes wearing jeans that expose one's boxers can be considered either "disorderly conduct or indecent exposure, both misdemeanors punishable by 93 days to a year in jail and/or fines up to $500."

He further broke down his interpretation of the laws as, "Pants pulled completely below the buttocks with underwear showing is disorderly conduct; saggy pants with skin of the buttocks showing is indecent exposure, and saggy pants, not completely below the buttocks, with underwear exposed results in a warning."

Whoa. I don't know about this, something smells extreme and oppressive and creepily '50s-conservative. Especially when you consider that one of the reasons to enforce this law is so cops have probable cause to search perpetrators for other crimes, such as weapon and drug possession. Eek.

Everybody wants to run the line We live in the land of the free, so we can do what ever we choose. May I remind with freedom comes great responsibilty. So you may be infringing on my freedom by wearing your pants down to the ground. I don't want to look at your behind and I shouldn't have to look the other way if I don't want to. So please respect my freedom. If some of you teenagers and grown men knew what wearing your pants to expose your behind meant, I bet you wouldn't wear your pants like that. This style comes from the jailhouse. It means you are giving up sex to someone if you are in the jail.

Please, Take pride in yourself. Especially my young African American Brothers. It is bad enough they think we are fools. Wearing you pants down to the floor only proves their point. African American men never dress this way back in the day. This look is not progress it is regress. We come from a proud people and that is how we should present ourselves. I am an Africam America male an I always look my best. I want to represent my family and race in a positive way. Whenever me and my wife attend an affair we always look our best. And pleases don't tell me that clothing is to expsensive. That is a lie, because the clothes that these guy are wearing is very expensive, that is another reason they should take pride in themselves and pull their pants up. I am all for outlawing this look REDICULOUS LOOK. I did not like this look in the 80s and 90s and i don't like it now. And I am from the original HIP HOP error. So pease dont tell me that this is the HIP HOP Look because that is a lie as well. We dress our best when HIP HOP First Started out.

SO PLEASE TAKE PRIDE IN YOURSELF AND PULL YOU PANTS UP. RESPECT YOUR SELF AND BE PROUD.

It's about time somebody got around to something like this. The last thing I want to see while standing in line at the supermarket with my granddaughter is the guy in front of me with his pants hanging down below his butt cheeks. Are these people that ignorant or is it a form of retardation? I was always taught that if your waist size is 32, you buy 32 (not 42). Parents, where are you?!?

This should be done everywhere. However, one person told me that we should not make these guys pull thier pants up, because when they do something illegal they are easy to catch. They keep tripping over their pants.

H'oh damn. XD I'm sad this is necessary. I'm a high school girl, and lots of the guys at my school have their pants down pretty low, and... while like, two of them can pull it off halfway, it just looks disgusting. It's not really an effective argument to be like, "HEY YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO SEE ME DRESSED LIKE THAT D<" because, c'mon, they're dudes, but it shore is disgusting. x_x

I hate sagging. Many times I've wanted to yell, "Pull your pants up!" at those ignorant looking buffoons. And yes, indecency laws need to be enforced.

if the children (yes, i said children because that's what most of the adult males who "sag" act like) knew where it really came from i don't think anyone would really want to sag anymore. i've been told two very different beginnings for this. the first being that it started in the days of slavery. the slave owner would make the slave wear too big pants to make it harder to run away. if that's the case why would anyone want to immortalize such a sad time. the other beginning was that it started in prisons because the guard wouldn't give the inmates belts. now in prison it's a symbol that you are "available".

I too am all for it and wish they would enforce it where I live. I can't imagine how anyone ever thought this look was desirable! Watching them try to walk is downright comical! It reminds me of the "M.C.Hammer" days when the crotch was below their knees. They have to literally waddle! I love to watch "Cops," this fashion statement always seems to foil the getaway! Soooooo cool to be running down the street and then falling down with your pants around your ankles!

LOW RYDERS I GUESS ARE NOT FOR THE GUYS -- AND JUST TO THINK THAT YOU CAN GET ARRESTED IT IS AMAZING! DON'T THEY REALIZE THAT BAGGY PANTS IS A FASHION JUST LIKE TWIGGY BACK IN THE SIXTY'S; DON'T LEAVE OUT BIKINI'S WHICH MEN CAN'T TAKE THEIR EYES OF --- VERY LITTLE LEFT FOR IMAGINATION -- WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TO --- BAGGY PANTS NEED TO BE ADDRESSED A.S.A.P.

I would be very interested in reading a dissection of the argument that this law is "racist" - a genuine, intelligent, well-expressed argument.

You see, for someone to claim that this is just a new way for the police to stop and search young black men, my response is that if you don't have anything to hide, who cares if you have to turn out your pockets? I don't carry a concealed weapon, drugs, or anything else that might get me in trouble, so search all you like.

Please, if you know of one, direct me to a strong argument for the "racist" nature of this law.

I'm all for that kind of law here where I live in Columbus Ohio. My oldest son is almost 15 and he has no pants or shorts loose enough to wear them that way. Fortunately I have children who think wearing their clothes like that is ridiculous. I won't say things aren't going to change in the next couple of years, but I have faith that my boys will never dress like that cause they don't like their clothes very loose, they like them to fit the way they are meant to fit. Almost every teenage boy that I see shows their boxers and the girls show their thongs and I do believe jail time is appropriate but not just for the kid but for the parent for the lack of common sense that clothes are made to cover all of you especially your breast, butt and vagina!!!! If you're showing parts that shouldn't be shown, then you should be charged with prostitution, why else would girls show what they got if their not wanting sex cause they know its going to turn most guys on. There is the chance for rape also due to the way females dress and they blame it all on the guy, when really it's not his fault that she wears seductive clothes that gets him hot and she flaunts herself like she's all that and them some and she wants to hug and kiss and then turn him down flat when she's got him horny and he rapes her because he feels he's justified to, because of all she done to get him started then pushed him away like he was a plaything that she could just toss aside when she was done using him. Parents should be charged as their pimps for buying them clothes like that or not enforcing rules upon their children and refusing to let them wear clothes in such a sexy fashion, that would cause them to get raped and sometimes killed. It's common sense, really. If you don't want your children raped and/or killed by a sexual predator STOP BUYING THEM PROVOCATIVE CLOTHING THAT MAKES THEM LOOK LIKE PROSTITUTES IN TRAINING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And, next it will be the color of your clothes, the length of your skirt, the way you comb your hair. This is a dangerous territory, does it end with shariah law?

      Thank you Chief Dicks.

This is BS. As long as the person is not expossing anything then who cares. If you look at the picture of the one that says disorderly conduct nothing is hanging out. I think the trend is as stupid as the next person. I enjoy having my pants in the proper place but who is anyone to tell someone else to dress. What if they come out and say all the little 18 year old girls can't wear their mini skirts because it offends some people. This is just another example of people rolling over and letting someone in a position of authority rape their rights.

Are you kidding me? People, it's a trend. Sure, your neon clothes of the 80's may have practically blinded your parents, but to arrest and fine them is just extreme.
