First Look: Katniss Everdeen's 'Girl on Fire' Costume in 'The Hunger Games'

Ever since the much-anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novel The Hunger Gameswent into production, fans (me included!) have been eagerly eating up the drips and drops of preview images and information that the studio has doled out, bit by bit. And hey, guess what? Here's another one! EW recently acquired an image of Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) chatting with Cinna (improbably, Lenny Kravitz) right before their big entrance into the games' opening ceremony-and presumably right before he lights them on fire. This might explained why they both look so concerned. Here, take a peek for yourself:
What do you think, Hunger Games fans? Does this live up to your expectations? For this is, of course, the infamous "Girl on Fire" costume-the one that will make Katniss (and Peeta, but mostly Katniss) the most memorable Tribute of the year. In the book, the costumes are described like this:
"I'm in a simple black unitard that covers me from ankle to neck. Shiny leather boots lace up to my knees. But it's the fluttering cape made of streams of orange, yellow, and red and the matching headpiece that define the costume. Cinna plans to light them on fire just before our chariot rolls into the streets."
Katniss goes on to say that her hair has been braided simply down her back and that her makeup has been kept minimal. The photo looks pretty close; I don't see the cape or the headpiece, but maybe they just haven't put them on yet. Said director Gary Ross to EW, "This is one of those moments where Cinna's character syncs up with the creativity of our costume designer Judianna Makovsky. What Cinna was trying to do was create something that came out of District 12, out of a coal mining world, with a fresh, bold look to it. So Judianna went to this wonderful black reflective material that glistened like coal or graphite and would obviously work well in the Tribute parade where Katniss becomes the Girl on Fire." Makovsky, by the way, has previously earned Oscar nods for her work on Ross' films Pleasantville and Seabiscuit, so clearly she knows what she's doing.
Notably, this image is from BEFORE Katniss and Peeta are lit on fire. It's understandable that they'd hold back on the finished look, when the two Tributes go live before the Capital; given how stunning they're revealed to be, it's only natural that they'd want to keep it under wraps until the big moment actually arrives. Here's what we've got to look forward to:
