Gwyneth Paltrow Skips Makeup and It's Just Not That Shocking

By Kate Sullivan, Allure magazine

Gwyneth Paltrow showed up for a reading of her book My Father's Daughter at an East Hampton, NY bookstore seemingly sans makeup and pictures of the event (like this one) popped up all over the interweb.

If you need the CliffsNotes version of how we feel about stars-without-makeup stories, here it is: When it's a tabloid "Gotcha!" photo spread, we think it's gross. When it has a "Wow, she's so real," we think "And women who wear makeup are also real."

But there are two more aspects to the "Look ma, no makeup" phenomenon that we still need to address: First, the fact that some commenter always (and often bitterly) insists that the "no makeup" celeb in question is in fact wearing makeup: "She totally has mascara on!" Could be. See, she never said she didn't have mascara on. This celebrity might be buying grapes from the grocery store or walking her dog. She's not running some scam on the public. In this case, Paltrow just showed up somewhere as was, which incidentally meant she was still in her swimsuit.

Which brings us to our second point: Sometimes no makeup is less shocking than full-makeup. East Hampton is a beach town. Wouldn't it have been weirder if she'd walked in to a bookstore full-glam in the middle of the day?
