H&M launching "Dragon Tattoo" clothing line

While we anxiously await the Versace for H&M collection launching next month, the Swedish retail giant has announced yet another exciting fashion collaboration in the works. A new line inspired by the upcoming film "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is set to debut in stores on December 14, one week before the movie release. The original novel was written by fellow Swede, Steig Larsson.

Costume designer Trish Summerville created a 30-piece collection that has an industrial urban feel with garments similar to pieces the anti-heroine computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander (played by Rooney Mara), will wear in the movie. Leather jackets and pants, torn jeans, and slouchy hoodies dominate the clothing line all in a gritty palette of black, gray, worn white, and dark red. Rounding out the collection are a hooded wool coat with a diagonal zipper, drapey cardigans, tight pants, a rough cut denim mini skirt, a knit snood, backpacks, boots, and tribal earrings.

"Salander's look is very real and very lived in, with pieces that her character has worn for a long time, like her jackets that act as her armor to shield her from the world," Summerville said in a statement. "I wanted the collection to have the essence and strength of Salander, with a fashion edge, and I'm pleased with the result! My goal is for women to find pieces in it that they love and then mix them with their own wardrobe to create their own personal style."

We're anticipating that the movie and this clothing line may inspire another wave of cyber-punk fashion like "The Matrix" spawned in 1999. (Remember the dark coats and glasses?) H&M is very excited about the collaboration and company reps say they'll strike a chord with shoppers. "I love this collection and what we've achieved with Trish," says Anna Norling, designer for Divided at H&M. "She has such an amazing eye, is so specific and has such a strong vision. The clothes are all about the attitude - they have a toughness to them but they are also really flattering. The collection is so much more than costume - it's a fashion statement, it's modern, and it's right for now."

The "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" collection will have an early debut at the trend-setting Colette boutique in Paris on November 28. The rest of us will have to wait till December 14 when the full collection launches worldwide in more than 175 H&M boutiques.
