Hair Donation Update!

Hair Donation Update!

Table full of ponytails.

I have been growing my hair out for two years. The random photographs and memories in my mind are littered with images of me with long straight locks. About a year ago I made the decision to continue growing my hair to donate it to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Beautiful Lengths collects hair donations to make real hair wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. On Sunday of last week, the day before I was cutting my hair, I was feeling uneasy about the change. Thoughts of "What will I look like?", "What if it looks bad, or it's too short?" raced through my brain. I understood my moment of panic, so much of our identity and confidence as women is tied to appearance. Then I remembered the women who's identity and appearance have been altered, sometimes drastically, by cancer and subsequent treatment, remembering this strengthened my resolve. On Monday I was happy to give 9" of hair (along with 32 other women and children) to someone I have never met and probably will never meet, but I know that gift will help to uplift her confidence and hopefully give her strength at a time when she needs it most.
