    Homemade recipes for your skin

With the economy doing whatever it's doing, who couldn't use some thrifty skincare right about now? I loved the fun homemade recipes you posted in response to my recent blog on salmon-beautified skin. Since this is the season for fresh produce and farmer's markets, I'm very inspired to whip up concoctions that do your skin good. My fridge is loaded with blueberries, strawberries and peaches (oh, the vitamins! The anti-oxidants!). But I'm just as ready to wear the smoothie as drink it! So here's my favorite recipe.

    Andrea's Super Simple Banana Mask:

This softens skin that's a little dry or sunburned. Mash up a banana and apply to your face; leave on for about 10 to 15 minutes. The fruit nourishes skin with moisture and nutrients (such as hydrating Omega 3s and 6s, plus vitamins C and B6 and potassium). Not to mention, it feels awesome!

I also love reader Sugr_Brez's Oatmeal/Avocado Mask, posted last week (she says it makes her glow for days!):

Mash together 2 T. oatmeal (dampened with a few drops of milk), 1/4 avocado, a few drops of honey and a few grains of sea salt. Rub it all over your face and neck. Rinse.

While we're talking skin, for an article I'm working on I'd love to hear any great tips you have for making fancy skincare serums and creams last. Thanks!

To lighten dark circles under your eyes, wrap a grated raw potato in cheesecloth and apply to eyelids for 15-20 minutes. Wipe off residue and apply an eye cream.

this works great for puffy eyes

just put a thin slice of a cool cucumber on both eyes, while they'e close, and pretty much relax for 15-20 minutes. You can repeat the application if needed.

Also, cool potato slices on the eyelids work good too.

i use raw/pure honey (as much as i can find at the grocery store) about 2/3 times a week....i leave it on anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes (usually when i'm watching a movie or something)....its amazing! it leaves you skin soft, its a natural antibiotic so it helps clear up my acne quick and you can tell a difference within 24 hours of the first use! simple, not expensive and full of results. hope that helps :o)

These are great ideas.....im sure with how hot this summer has been, cooling off with a fruit mask can't hurt! Honey is a good idea too - might even be fun to mix in some fresh mint leaves lol.

Aveeno is not exactly the best stuff for skin, you might find if you look at the ingredients you're left wondering what a lot of that stuff is and if you arent sure you probably shouldnt be using it.

Grid up 1/3 cup of Oatmeal in a food processor or bean grinder mix with

Lynn Seed oil or Tea Tree Oil for acne

Shea Butter or advocato oil for dry skin

let it sit in for a few minutes rinse and wash with whatever soap you'd like (honestly I use dial soap hand soap, does wonder for pimples)

coffee grinds mixed w/body wash literally make my skin look soft. The leftover gevalia/folgers has some oil in it. When I snow bird in winter, it transforms my skin.

      Hi Andrea,
I once used this facial for a whole summer and it kept my face oil free and very toned. ground 2 tbsp of plain oatmeal, not the instant oatmeal, beat one egg white until light and frothy, combine the two and apply directly to your face. Let dry completely and rinse. the oatmeal absorbs any dirt and oil in your skin and the egg white tightens and leaves your skin glowing.

I have naturally red skin as well. It gets better when I drink plenty of water, abstain from caffeine, and avoid using harsh chemicals on my skin. I only use all natural foundation now, as regular foundations irritated my skin. See this article in wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosacea. It might give you some ideas on how to treat your skin.

first I start off with a rubbing alchol mixed with tea tree oil
then I follow it up with witchhazel mixed with neem, rosemary, and tea tree.
