How Credible Are Makeup Product Reviews?

Just curious..I want to give my girlfriend something for her b-day that is make-up related, but I'm not sure which product is considered the "best". I found a website that has a bunch of makeup product reviews , but I'm not sure how credible this is. Do the ladies reading this a have a favorite product? Do you agree with these reviews or should I not base my purchasing decision on this? Thanks!

Picking the right make up depends on what you are looking for. Is she looking for a natural look, a dramatic look, etc? Also, everyone has different skin types and that is very important when considering makeup. I have dry skin so something that works for me probably won't work for someone with oily skin.

As far as an expensive brand, I really like Urban Decay eye makeup. Their eye primer is a must have. Helps your makeup stay on all day. You can get his at Sephora. As far as drug store brands I like Maybelline and Loreal products. There is a really good and realiable makeup review website. It is www.makeupalley.com Good luck!!!

I WOULD SAY TO GO TO A STORE LIKE ULTA OR SEPHORA BECAUSE YOU TEND TO GET HELP BASED ON THE BEST PRODUCTS AND NOT JUST A PERSON TRYING TO SELL YOU ANYTHING! ALSO I WOULD RELY ON BLOGS AND REVIEWS BY ACTUAL WOMEN THAT HAVE USED THE MAKE UP AND NOT RELY ON THE PRODOCT DESCRIPTION OR WHAT THE STORE SAYS. ALTHOUGH I LOVE MAC IT CAN BE OVER RATED AND SHE PROBABLY HAS A LOT OF IT ALREADY..I WOULD SUGGEST URBAN DECAY OR A NEW LINE CALLED MAKE UP FOREVER (AVAIL. AT SEPHORA) WHICH I ALSO LOVE AND USE (IT IS BECOMING VERY POPULAR). I ALSO SUGGEST LOOKING AT HER MAKEUP SO YOU DONT GET SOMETHING SIMILAR...I WOULD STICK TO A GREAT EYE SHADOW OR A COOL LIP PLUMPER GLOSS! GOOD LUCK!!

THat's very thoughtful of you. I'm a make-up artist at M.A.C and I'm thinking you should get her some of the cute holiday sets we currently have on counter. It has a varity of colors and she can try them all till she finds a favorite.

To be on the safe side try getting her an appointment for a make up consultation and a gift certificate for some goodies. And if she feels shy you should join her and make it a fun memory.

      Hope it helped. Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice! She's really gung ho on getting makeup this year (she wants to revamp her entire look), but she can't afford all these products because she just got laid off. Figured it would be a nice gesture.

Sephora is really the only way to go...They have all the major brands but there are affordable things as well. Check out Sephora.com under their "Gifts" Section. I promise she'll love anything from there!

Check out the beauty stores - Sephora and Ulta. Then pick up a few different make up kits or travel-size make up pallets. These include a little of everything: powder, blush, eyeshadow, lip gloss, etc. To get the right color combination (they usually go by skin tone or eye color) make sure you ask for help!

That is really cool that you would think to do that! I say if you want to check reviews, to check the reviews at more than one website. Here's another site to check out: http://www.totalbeauty.com/

You can also check online magazines to find their Best Beauty Buys and Product Awards, this also helps a lot too.

      allure.com

      cosmopolitan.com

      glamour.com

Hope this helps, and good luck to you!

Maybe a good set of make- up brushes, or a nice make-up case with some accessories would be nice.

I agree with BroadwayBaby. Stick with the "Gifts" section on Sephora.com. It is the go-to website for anything beauty related, and now they have reliable comments on every product that buyers write themselves. You can always trust Sephora!

Yes I do have a favorite cosmetic and skin care line. I have an all natural skin care line that will be coming out in 2009. This is a natural paraben free line that has been Doctor tested. I have 26 years of expereince in the business. I am very passionate about the skin care business and assisting people in their skin care needs. My website should be available by 12/1/08 so watch out for DD Dupree Cosmetics "the right way". If you have an immediate question, please e-mail me at dddupreecosmetics@yahoo.com it would be wonderful to talk to you

Most definately tfrank...How sweet of you to have her in mind like that, cool.
So, My daughter and I prefer Benefit cosmetics they are very good in the sense that they do not make a girl "breakout" it's a great make up line.
Some reviews are great but be aware that some might be extremely expensive.
You can always check out her makeup and see what she is into...mascara, lipstick. Well my friend you have your work cut out.
But if you need any advice on make up, drop me a line on my blogs.
By the way there is a great store, it's called Ulta beauty, you can check out the website, they have great stuff, name brands.
      Have fun there. :)
Also if you get Lucky magazine, they have good reviews there also.
      Good luck my friend.
But you can always drop me a line like I said for makeup advise.

I used to work for Sephora as a make up artist. It was such an awesome place to work necause we weren't on commission! We gave make overs and advice because we loved our jobs and what we worked with. Plus, the RETURN policy is very customer friendly. :)

I agree with everyone here about the gift section of sephora. However, you can also check out several beauty blogs to see what girls are really raving about. Some of my favorite are Spoiled Pretty, Beauty Blogging Junkie and 15 Minute Beauty Fanatic. Also, MAC products are definitely amazing and they have some great Holiday collections out now.

I don't know but I'd say anything lip related. =) you know your girl better than anyone, and this is a chance for you to get a say in what she wears. =D use the privelege.
