How the women of John Hughes movies taught us everything we know about style

John Hughes died yesterday and we here at Shine are in serious mourning. It's dorky and strange and perhaps too emotional to say that John Hughes helped shape who we are, but it's not an exaggeration. I honestly don't know if I would be a fashion editor today were it not for my 587 viewings of "Sixt

Him and MJ in the same summer. Unbelievable. I feel like my 80s childhood is gone. Sixteen Candles is one of my fav movies of all time.

I love "Pretty in Pink" and not just the looks that Molly sported. Annie Potts had some great, dramatic looks in that movie. Can't believe that John Hughes in gone... It seems like the end of an era.

I am also a HUGE fan of the Breakfast Club Molly Ringwald look. The boots still kill me--NEED them and have never gotten over my boot desires. Same with classic, straight, wrap skirt The hats, and softly curled hair of Sixteen Candles are timeless and I still wish to acheive this look a gazillion years after the movie came out. Sigh.

Hey Hermitage Weddings: Speaking of fashion,
Yea I really like looking at thug's underwear
hanging outside below their pants while grabbing their crotch to hold them up still below their butt.
Or even seeing someone's butt crack jeans
      like in today's fashions. LOL.......
I hear that mowhawks are coming back too!

Ugh! What is the world's obsession with Molly Ringwald?! I've always found her creepy to look at and a whiny, poor actress.

I had almost forgotten how many awesome movies John Hughes was responsible for... I was in my early 20's when most of these came out, but I connected with the characters. Always wanted to be a real redhead like Molly. So sad that he's gone now. Might be time for a J.H. movie marathon this weekend!

16 Candles is STILL my favorite movie of all time! I too, felt the need to rewind the scene where Jake came to the wedding looking for Sam; I think I even re-enacted with Barbie and Ken. Anything Molly Ringwald did, I wanted to do. Molly Ringwald says eating carrots will increase your bust size, guess what.....I'm eating carrots! I made my mom put carrots in my lunch solely because Molly Ringwald did it....so many memories. John Hughes may be gone but never forgotten.

Classic line........"Where is your lunch?" Your wearing it!" How about those songs? Still hear them on the radio and I am taken back. John really captured the teenage years in the 80's. NO one has even come close. Nor could they. He was one of a kind......RIP. You will be missed.

So sorry to hear that this iconic film maker died!! He truly gave the world some awesome movies; ones that I know, I treasured through high school and so did my friends. I so was Molly Ringwald's character in The Breakfast Club. Good girl with the likes of the bad boy. Judd Nelson seemed so bad but so tender hearted too! Who couldn't love Beverly D'Angelo.. Iconic lady and well, love her! Her marriage to Chevy Chase in that film reminds me of my marriage some time... though not the Christie Brinkly scene... Thank Goodness! RIP John Hughes!

YES! I was a major fan of all his films (sans Curly Sue, lol.)
I learned perfect sarcasm from these flicks. His sense of humor was impeccable and he portrayed teens in way that wasn't talking down to teens or was a cliche' of teens. Not like some of these awful 'teen' movies are today. And I agree with the article's author, I too, jocked Molly Ringwald's style in these films! It was such a breath of fresh air to see she wasn't "valley girled" out like everyone else. She was 'alternative'. 16 Candles was so influential on me as a tender 11 year old, I saw that it was way better and cooler, to be an individual, no matter how strange you, your family or situation may be. And Watt's from SKofW was the shiznit! The opitimty of cool. Independant, sassy, all heart. John Hughes, they don't and can't make movies like you did. Say what's up to MJ for me please.

John Hughes, writer, producer, director and all around brilliant man. He produced timeless movies that captivated teens and adults.

"Save the neck for me Clark". His movies had the most repeated quotes of any other writer or movie producer in history.

      R.I.P Sir Hughes.

Andy always inspired me, too- if it doesn't look right, remake the dress!

John Hughes was AND defined the 80's.

John Hughes shaped my world, from my obsession with make-up from all of those shots of putting on lipstick to my affinity for finding the good in my bad boys (my parents did not believe in censorship, so I watched Breakfast Club when it was first released when I was 9--if they only knew what they did lol). And who can forget the music...you have to smile every time you hear those songs. And all those memorable lines..."You look good wearing my future." I don't think he will ever be forgotten has generations continue to be introduced to his movies.

Couldn't agree more! Love those movies and the fashion was indeed AWESOME. Especially loved Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles.

      RIP John Hughes.
