Or at least, that's what I thought.
I've been unimpressed by the cellulite solutions I've tried in the past, but when I recently broached the subject with Dr. Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, a New York City dermatologist, she made me realize my expectations were a bit too high. Most cellulite treatments are only temporary fixes that reduce the appearance of cellulite (read: no cure, nothing radical).
Here, her suggestions that sounded most promising, even though they're not at all permanent:
Alma Accent Your Body . Dr. AA is a fan of this dual-layer thermotherapy (in short, a laser treatment). The cheerfully named Accent Your Body uses radiofrequency technology to firm the collagen between your skin and cellulite (which is unevenly distributed fat cells between your skin and muscle tissue). Once the collagen is firmed, "It pushes the fat back, away from the skin," she says. Basically, it hides it.
Slavish applications. This one takes discipline. "To see real results with most cellulite products, they should be applied at least twice a day for three months," she says. "You have to keep regular levels of the product in your skin." And if you stop? "You'll go back to square one."
Caffeine. An oldie but a goodie. "When caffeine is applied topically, the blood vessels constrict and the fat cells actually temporarily shrink," she says. Before you dump your morning coffee on your legs, the best way to apply caffeine to a dimply tush is to buy it in a cream form (you can find it in most cellulite creams, like Bliss FatGirlSlim) and apply a generous amount (like, a palm-sized full) to your skin right after you get out of the shower (so nothing interferes with absorption)
Massage! Ahhh. "It's actually a little unclear as to why, but the token explanation for how massages work to hide cellulite is that the rubbing slightly swells the skin and 'evens it all out,'" says Dr. AA. Interesting.
Funny-I'm suddenly craving a pair of short shorts. Who's with me?
