How to Dress for Job-Interview Success

What you wear to an interview makes a major statement in even the best job markets. But in today's hyper-competitive landscape, anything you can do to get a leg up on the competition is a must-including dressing the part. You can set yourself apart from the hopeful pack by following these simple guidelines.

    Wear a Suit
Our society has gotten more casual over the years-with people going so far as to wear pajamas in public! But that doesn't mean you shouldn't dress professionally in the business world, even if the job you are applying for has a relaxed dress code. A tailored suit in black, navy, or grey (if you opt for a skirt suit, make sure it isn't too tight or short, especially when you sit down) over a button-up blouse (no camis, as you might need to take off your jacket if you get hot) is the way to go. If you're worried you might get nervous and perspire during the interview, opt for a blouse in a dark color that won't show underarm sweat.

    Be a Natural Beauty
There are times and places for fun makeup and hair, but job interviews aren't one of them. Keep your cosmetics neutral and keep shimmering products for the celebratory night out after you get the job. Hair should be neat and professional. You can't go wrong by pulling it back into a ponytail or bun. Skip the blue nail polish, making sure you go with something classic and make sure your nails are shaped and not too long. While we know practically anything can be accomplished with long nails, you don't want to look like you're not up for using a computer or cash register. Go light on the perfume or skip it all together. Even though you love your signature scent, your interviewer might not, and you don't want such a small thing to ruin your chances.

    Accessorize Wisely

We love funky accessories and jewelry as much as the next girl, but keeping your finishing touches on the conservative side is best. You want to look ready to roll up your sleeves and work, not too flashy or high-maintenance (keep designer labels out of sight). Wearing a simple necklace and stud earrings paired with basic pumps ensures you'll be dressed for success regardless of the audience. Make sure your handbag isn't too large or overflowing with stuff. You might have to reach in for a copy of your résumé (ideally from a folder to ensure it looks crisp) or a pen to jot something down and you don't want makeup and receipts falling out.

Nice article, but the word 'success' is misspelled on the main page link to this article. Oops!

As the article says, "What you wear to an interview makes a major statement in even the best job markets."

      So do typos! :)

No matter if you're applying to McDonalds or to Goldman Sacks, a pair of dress pants and a collared shirt is an absolute necessity of the job interview. Depending a little on the locality, you can casual it up with a sweater or no jacket, but that's about as far as you should ever take it. Your potential employer is not interested in how hot your style sense is.

Reinvent yourself! What fun! This is a "cheer you on" comment .. :O)
... a a few words from a-hopefully wise-old bird. Remember subtle is sexier than obvious, classy is usually understated, and a big, natural, wonderful smile captures more good feedback and reaction than all the frozen, practiced responses we paint with "should do" "must do" or "better do" in our quest for success and/or acceptance. Good luck!
      God speed! :O)
