    How to Pick Sunglasses

    By Abigail L. Cuffey

How to Pick SunglassesHow to Pick SunglassesThe sun can do serious damage to your eyes, raising your risk of sight-robbing conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. Here's how to pick sunglasses that truly protect.

    1. Scrutinize labels. There's no industry standard for UV labels, so it's hard to know if they're accurate, says Madeline L. Romeu, OD, UV advisor for the American Optometric Association. The safest bet: Pick sunglasses that say "99% or 100% ultraviolet blocking," instead of just "UV protection."

    2. Go dark. If you look in a mirror and can easily see your eyes through the lenses, the glasses probably won't block enough light.

    3. Fit matters. Make sure the frames aren't too loose. If they slide down your nose, damaging sunlight will stream in from the top and sides.

    4. If possible, go to a pro. It costs a little more, but buying from an eyeglass shop (such as LensCrafters) instead of a stand in the mall means a technician can check the UV protection capabilities of the lenses as well as the fit of the glasses.

Maui Jim sunglasses are the best. Blocking out 99.9% glare and 100% UV A,B,C.
Developed in Hawaii. Maui Jim's patented polarized plus technology is amazing!

i never got some girls like to rock those ignoramus sunglasses that cover most their face and make them look like a bug or alien. How much sun do you need to keep/block off your face exactly?

      Lenscrafters? Really?
    • Michele A  •  2 years 1 month ago
Yeah Agreed....Lenscrafters? How about just saying Eye Care Professional and let people choose what type of help they get! I mean why would you promote a specific place and hurt the rest of the businesses??!!

So many people unknowingly damage there eyes by wearing cheap sunglasses with UV "coating". If that coating is worn or scratched the UV rays will penetrate and damage your eyes. What is even worse is that the darker the lens the more open your pupils are for the damaging rays. Opt for a brand such as Oakley that uses a polycarbonate lens because the material itself blocks 100% UV, so technically you could wear a clear polycarbonate lens and no harmful light will come through.

Personally going to the local thrift store and picking up a cheap pair of old school 80's sunglasses worked just fine. Going to lenscrafters is a little extreme. but what ever floats your boat.

People Wear Those Oversized Sunglasses So It Appears They Are Skinnier Than They Really Are. Cracks Me Up To See Their Necks Stuffed Out Of Their Tops. But When It Comes To Protection Use polarized Sun Glasses, Because Most Nearsighted Prescription Wearers Will Not Need To Wear Their Prescription Glasses As Polarization Acts As Corrective Driving Glasses. You Would Be Amazed At How Well Polarized Sunglasses Bring Detail Of Contrast Of The Objects You Focus On Actually Zooms In A Perfect Picture of What You Are Seeing Without Prescriptions. Just A Hot Tip.

Bigger sunglasses are better! The skin around the eyes is more delicate and thinner than the rest of the face, so the more you can shield it from the sun, the better. Also, a clear piece of glass offers 100% UV protection, it has nothing to do with the color. You will probably squint less if your lenses are darker, which helps prevent wrinkles, but that's about it.

Ever wonder why we wear sunglasses with frames we would never wear for regular eyeglasses? I do it too. I love my sunglasses, but I would never wear these frames with regular lenses. They are large and they fit close, so close that there's almost no gap between my face and the frames. And this is perfectly acceptable in sunglasses but would be perfectly dorky with regular lenses. Why is that?
