The tribal trend is reaching a fever pitch this summer, and ikat prints are all part of the fun. Stars like Mariska Hargitay have already road-tested this look, inspiring us to ditch our solids and get in on the action.
First, though, read our handy pointers for making the ikat trend work for your figure-plus scope out our favorite picks.
The most important rule to remember when dealing with prints is to keep things proportional. A huge ikat print will overwhelm your small frame, so stick to smaller prints. If you're going for a dress or skirt, opt for something with a shorter length to help elongate your legs. Kristen Bell opted for a cocktail length ikat print dress from Oscar de la Renta for a red carpet event.
Meet the perfect summer sundress. We love the bold color and sexy halter back. Add clogs for extra lift. FP- 1 ikat halter dress ($148, freepeople.com).
Only skinny minnies can get away with this short skater skirt, which will help show off your legs. We'd pair it with a strapless black bustier-top and strappy heels for a flirty night out. Delia's Lacey ikat print skirt ($34.50, delias.com)
Fake mile-long legs in these itsy-bitsy ikat shorts by Kain Label ($92.40, shopbop.com).
Again, proportions are key here. More voluptuous ladies are better-suited to larger ikat prints, though you'll want to be careful with how you wear them. For instance, a tight dress or top in a loud print can look unflattering, while a floaty blouse paired with black bottoms is more on target. Be aware that prints will draw the eye to them, so if you've got, say, a heavy bottom you're best off with an ikat top that keeps the attention up north. Mariska Hargitay's dress really works well on her.
This ruffle-trimmed top can be paired with black trousers and a blazer or cardigan for work, and your favorite jeans and stilettos for play. Ikat ruffle print tank ($34.50, lanebryant.com).
Go glam in this beaded dress by Ruby Road ($49, dillards.com). The dress works because the print is big but not overpowering and the fabric skims the body without being too tight. Add a belt along the waist if you want to break up the print and create an hourglass shape, plus heels for extra height.
Another great am/pm transition top, this tank would look fab paired with dark denim or a sleek pencil skirt. Torrid purple aqua ikat zipper top ($24.98, torrid.com).
Tall gals like Whitney Port can get away with larger ikat prints, so avoid delicate tiny prints and hone in on those that are roughly the size of your fist. To avoid looking like human wallpaper, stick to tops paired with denim or solid bottoms, or dresses that have a belted waist or color-blocking to break up a long frame. In other words, no intense ikat muumuus or maxis for you.
This maxi works because of the black ruffle-trimmed top, which provides a nice balance to the bold ikat bottom. The larger print is also proportionate for long frames. Arden B. ikat ruffle maxi dress ($79, ardenb.com).
