Bob Veloz and Oprah at their low-key birthday party.Late last month when we heard that Oprah Winfrey had suddenly canceled her 60th birthday party-we suspected that the story was simply a ruse to throw media and peripheral, non-guest-list worthy friends off the scent of her sexagenarian soiree. And today, based on new reports of a super-secret birthday party this past weekend, it seems as though we may have been right.
E! reports that instead of the 450-person affair she originally planned, the media empress "downsized," instead only hosting 250 guests. And because this is Oprah, and not your burnt-out relative, a "downsized" birthday party still meant that it took place over two days, involved a formal dress code, and included at least one member of the Brat Pack in attendance. (Rob Lowe, holler). The event was co-hosted by Winfrey's friend, neighbor, and fellow mogul Bob Veloz, who was celebrating his 80th birthday. More details about the event, per E!:
"Winfrey's event planner pal Colin Cowie oversaw every detail as the ballroom was decorated in shades of red. Female guests were asked to wear formal gowns in the fiery shade. In addition to serving a five-course dinner and having an open bar, a live band played until midnight. [...] The next day at noon, Winfrey and Veloz hosted a "gospel brunch" at the Bacara Resort. A 40-person choir serenaded and entertained the 100 special guests, including personal trainer Bob Greene and local philanthropist Lady Riddley-Tree, plus Winfrey's partner Stedman Graham and BFF Gayle King. Though Winfrey doesn't typically like surprises, she became animated when two of her friends took the stage. 'I never expected my friends BeBe Winans and Rob Lowe singing together,' she marveled."
Says a source, "Oprah and Bob marked their milestone birthdays with a dignified and downscaled event, and they couldn't be happier." While we're not sure that a 40-person, choir-serenaded brunch, five-course dinner, and strict dress code qualifies as "downscaled," we're happy that Oprah seems to have had a wonderful birthday celebration.
