International survey says American tourists are worst dressed

One travel writer surveyed 3,400 people from 99 countries about the most terribly outfitted tourists. The overwhelming majority of them (41.9%) said American tourists dressed the worst. THE WORST IN THE WORLD! How sad.

We think there's something about traveling that makes Americans dress worse than they every would normally. First of all, many people wear pajamas, sweatpants, or warm-up pants to the airport to be comfy on their flight. They may not wear these in their every day life, but consider this OK for traveling because they're in "vacation mode." Once they arrive at their destination, they change into ill-fitting shorts, socks with sandals, matching t-shirts, and fannypacks for a walk around town. Back home would you ever wear matching t-shirts with your whole family? Of course not. And if it's a tropical vacation, Americans may opt for the Hawaiian shirt, thinking they'll fit right in. (They're wrong.) Throw on a goofy hat, stick a map in their hands, and a camera strap around their neck and you have the sad sight that is the American tourist.

These other nationalities were called out for their traveling outfits as well:

German - 13.8%
British - 8.8%
Chinese - 5.7%
Japanese - 4.9%
Russian - 3.8%
Australian - 1.6%

We know vacation isn't about putting on a fashion show, but remember when you're traveling (especially outside the U.S.) you are representing your homeland. Let's put our best foot forward!
