Michele Bachmann's auburn hairstyle is gaining popularity. Photo by Getty ImagesWhether or not you agree with her political views, Michele Bachmann has one quality many women love: great hair. A recent piece in the New York Daily News suggests her auburn, layered 'do may even be the new "it" style over the ever-popular Jennifer Aniston look. Is the 'Bachmann' the new "Rachel"? We spoke with some top New York City stylists to find out.
"Michele Bachmann has this personality where she's a rebel," says Adolfo Pliego, senior stylist at Chris Chase salon. "Anyone that really expresses themselves and speaks their mind, people want to be like them and look like them." But that's not the only reason Bachmann's look is gaining momentum. "Just like how people loved Sarah Palin's hair, this is a very practical style. It's Middle America. This style is great for a woman who works a lot, has kids, and has no time to do their hair. It's short, but still long enough to put it in a ponytail. You don't have to do a lot to it to make it look good because it's already sort of messy, and that's the whole point. This could even be a great style for growing out a bob."
Adir Abergel, lead stylist at Frederic Fekkai, has not had anyone request the style yet, but is not surprised to hear it's popular. "Most politicians don't necessarily have great fashion sense, and I think this is why it's making even more of an impact because it's a fashionable haircut. It has this lush, auburn color to it which gives it a lot more vibrancy, and on top of that she has a heavy, side-swept bang with very slight layering on the bottom. But let's be honest here: it's not a revolutionary haircut, but it's very wearable. Women are busy and they're looking for styles that can get them out the door in five minutes, and this will work on a variety of ages."
Bachman's hair can be styled for a more fashion-forward or conservative look. Photo by …Another reason people may love the look: Bachmann was born with great hair. "It's straight, shiny, healthy, and she has a lot of it," says Pliego. "No matter what you do with that hair it will always look beautiful. In order to get that many people have to straighten it and use extensions." Wait... is Bachmann using extensions? "I have questions about it, but it could be real," adds Pliego. "I'll have to take a look at more pictures."
Michele Bachmann reportedly paid her stylist, Tamara Robertson, $4,700 for hair and makeup out of campaign funds, so extensions could factor in, but you don't need to break the bank to recreate her cut. "Cost depends on which salon and which stylist you go to," says Abergel. "I know people here where you can get a haircut for $65 or places where you can get an $800 haircut. It's all about the technician."
As for that auburn color, Pliego thinks this is an easy DIY job. "It's very easy to achieve with any product at home. Pick up hair dye at the pharmacy-this is exactly what box color is going to give you." If you are planning to warm up your hair color with dye, Abergel says, "red shades brighten up your skin tone, but it is the first color to fade. You should use color-extending shampoos to keep it up."
The New York Daily News asked Andi Scarbrough of Byu-ti Hair Therapy in L.A. about the politician hair phenomenon. "A lot of clients have asked for Sarah Palin hair in the past four years, and now, it's Bachmann," said Scarbrough. "Politicians are the new celebrities, because they're real. They didn't just spring up out of the red carpet." She thought some may not even be Bachmann fans since, "I have women who come in with photos with the face cut out sometimes." New York salon owner and stylist Angelo David told the NYDN that he's been getting requests for the auburn style as well. "She has great coppery color that warms her up a little bit," he said. "Not everybody wants to look like Kim Kardashian."
Jennifer Aniston's beach blonde shag remains a popular request at salons. Photo by Getty …Our verdict: Bachmann's style may be popular but the hunt for the new "Rachel" lives on. While neither of these stylists had received specific requests for the Michele Bachmann look the continuing popularity of Aniston's cuts is evident. "People still keep requesting her hair," says Pliego, "The Jennifer Aniston look will never die out."
