Karl Lagerfeld's Most Controversial Quotes Ever

Karl Lagerfeld has a lot of nasty things to say. Karl Lagerfeld has a lot of nasty things to say. Karl Lagerfeld is the 78-year-old designer who is also the mastermind behind Chanel and Fendi. You might recognize him since he's often wearing head-to-toe black, dark sunglasses, a ponytail, and carries a fan. To say he's eccentric would be an understatement-in fact, we think he gets off saying shocking and offensive things the fashion elite will then gobble up and swoon over. But even if Lagerfeld is a fashion genius, we refuse to laugh or even shrug off his distasteful remarks, which at this point are more predictable than provocative.

Lagerfeld's latest off-the-cuff insults target Adele, the best-selling singer of 2011. While the designer understands her popularity, he told in Metro, where he recently posed as guest editor, that her physical appearance is rather unfortunate. "The thing at the moment is Adele," he told Metro. "She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice." Interesting statement coming from Lagerfeld who himself was 90 pounds heavier before his extreme diet 2001. And while many criticize newbie singer Lana del Rey as a contrived flash in the pan, Lagerfeld likes how she looks, and feels this makes her acceptable. "Lana del Rey is not bad at all. She looks very much like a modern-time singer. In her photos she is beautiful. Is she a construct with all her implants? She's not alone with implants."

Next Lagerfeld goes on to bash Russians. Why, we don't know. But he's "the Kaiser" so why not? "If I was a woman in Russia I would be a lesbian, as the men are very ugly. There are a few handsome ones, like Naomi Campbell's boyfriend, but there you see the most beautiful women and the most horrible men." While his comments may not be considered as offensive as Jean Galliano's anti-Semitic rant that got him fired from Dior, we think Lagerfeld's comments can be extremely aggressive and hurtful.

Lastly, Lagerfeld endorses President Barack Obama. Even though he's never voted in his life. But his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, is pretty! And isn't that reason enough to like the guy? "Yes he does [deserve to be re-elected], especially because of Mrs. Obama," Lagerfeld told Metro. "I'm a big fan of Mrs. Obama - and her face, I think, is magical. He would not be there without her. Mrs. Obama is not a fashion statement, but she has other things to do. My favorite thing about Mrs. Obama was when she was asked if her skirt was not too tight and she answered "Why you don't like my big black ass?" [Ed. note: Kristina Schake, Director of Communications to First Lady Michelle Obama released a statement confirming she never said anything of the kind.] I want Obama to win because there is nothing better anyway, and especially because of her."

Lagerfeld's agenda and tastes are obvious. Pretty and thin = good. Ugly = bad. But is the fashion world so insanely shallow that they treat him like some kind of prophet? Ugh, we find it so gross.

In honor of Lagerfeld's latest insults, we've rounded up his most controversial and offensive comments ever. Take a look, and let us know if you think this guy should be an admirable icon.

    On weight:

"No one wants to see curvy women. You've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying thin models are ugly. Fashion is about dreams and illusions."
    Source: Focus magazine

"The body has to be impeccable as well-that helps a lot. If it's not, buy small sizes and eat less food."
    Source: Harper's Bazaar

"Florals are for middle-aged women with weight problems."
    Via Karl Lagerfeld Quotes

    On vanity:
"Life is not a beauty contest, some [ugly people] are great. What I hate is nasty, ugly people... the worst is ugly, short men. Women can be short, but for men it is impossible. It is something that they will not forgive in life... they are mean and they want to kill you."
    Source: Vogue, April 2003

"I'm very impeccable and clean before I go to bed. It's just like right before I'm going out. When I was a child, my mother always told me that you could wake up in the middle of the night and be deathly sick, so you always have to be impeccable. I laugh about it now, but I think everyone should go to bed like they have a date at the door."
    Source: Interview magazine

"Vanity is the healthiest thing in life."
    Source: Vogue UK

    On money:
"If you throw money out of the window throw it out with joy. Don't say 'one shouldn't do that' - that is bourgeois"
    Source: The Observer

    On why he's pro-fur:

"It is farmers who are nice to the cows and the pigs and then kill them. It's even more hypocritical than hunters. At least the hunters don't flatter the animals....I don't like that people butcher animals, but I don't like them to butcher humans either, which is apparently very popular in the world."
    Source: Vice magazine

    On kids:
"Having adult children makes you look 100 years old. I don't want that"
    Source: The Observer

    On sex:
"I personally only like high-class escorts. I don't like sleeping with people I really love. I don't want to sleep with them because sex cannot last, but affection can last forever. I think this is healthy. And for the way the rich live, this is possible."
    Source: Vice magazine

    On magazines:
"People in magazines are 50% bimbo and 50% pregnant women." [Ed. note: Does anyone know what this means?!]
    Source: Metro

    On making offensive remarks:
"Be politically correct, but please don't bother other people with conversation about being politically correct, because that's the end of everything. You want to create boredom? Be politically correct in your conversation."
    Source: Vice magazine

We'll have to disagree. We think being rude and insulting is boring, and feel Lagerfeld could use a little more political correctness in his conversation.

It is true about the fashion industry being illusion and about dreams...so I wish women would realize that and not take this fashion crap so literal lol. I can look at the clothes, hair, and makeup and ignore models in sample sizes. I also ignore and don't read any women's magazines because they like to tell women what to do and look like. I think if you want to look thin or large or muscular - it's your prerogative, but don't do it to fit in a trend. You are setting yourself for failure.

Pretty long article about someone who is boring

I thought that was a recent picture of Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts!?
      • Reppy 3 months ago
        Er, Charlie Watt's grandpa, maybe.
      • Bilko 3 months ago
No. Maybe his dad though. Charlie's 70 yrs old himself!

Fred Armisen from SNL should do a spoof on this guy! It would be hilarious!

"Having adult children makes you look 100 years old." Well, being 78 years old makes you look 100 years old, pretty much...

I love Adele's voice, but it shouldn't matter what size she is, yes she needs to be healthy, but that in no way means a certain size. He's a prick anyways.
      • booksense 3 months ago
Thank you! I will never understand why a singer's SIZE is of any consequence to their music???? If Adele was a high fashion model and made her living based on her body, then yes---but it isn't! And not just Adele but any singer. Rhianna may have a more accepted body, but her singing is nowhere close to Adele.
    • Callie  •  Warren, Oregon  •  3 months ago
As a plus size girl, I completely understand the statements. There is nothing wrong with being fat, I am, but also it is not the ideal weight. It is not healthy and also it does not look the best. I am working hard to become thin because I want to look the best I can be and be healthy. Come on, a lot of his comments have probably crossed your own minds at some point.......we are all human.

He's a fashion guy - of course he will focus on looks. Really, people?
    • Niko-chan  •  Dallas, Texas  •  3 months ago
And my response to him along with people who think the same way:

"From a curvy woman like myself, you all can go to hell"

      End of discussion

Looks like he's most of way there already.

I like curvy women, so there.
      • Niko-chan 3 months ago
@TCB lol Sad but true. Unless he changes his ways ...but then when will that happen?

@Richard And Curvy women love you too. ;-)

What do you expect from someone who has been in the fashion industry? They adore the superficial and the skinny.
    • LisaR  •  Milwaukee, Wisconsin  •  3 months ago
...and clearly he has self esteem problems. It's tragic that he doesn't understand that EVERYONE has great value in God's eyes.
    • K-Dor  •  Mechelen, Belgium  •  3 months ago
Errr... he'd better take a good look at himself first...
    • The Dude  •  3 months ago
Why does anyone care what he says? He's just one man with questionable fashion taste.
    • brown eyed chick  •  Highlands Ranch, Colorado  •  3 months ago
Um...he's in fashion and he's old and can get away with anything, so of course he's going to say stuff like that. Personally, I think his comments probably aren't the nicest, but whatever. I get tired of everybody being told they have to be politically correct all the time.
    • Beth  •  Bethesda, Maryland  •  3 months ago
His mother made him go to bed date like clean? How much you want to bet there were some wire hanger incidents in his childhood? I'm assuming he likes the controversy these inappropriate comments bring him and that's why he says them. He's best ignored. Regardless, the guy gives me the creeps.
    • Richard Dickman  •  Milwaukee, Wisconsin  •  3 months ago
      He's still alive?
    • Jennifer  •  3 months ago
Well... at least the mean old coot is honest. I don't agree with most of what he says, but I guess everyone is entitled to his or her opinion.

Not all Germans dislike/look down on Russians- the 'author' of this article is offensive in implying that. Nice way to slide in your personal distaste to Germans. Unprofessional. And if the Germans would be considered a race the tone of that section would be racist.

Let's hope he's wearing that outfit to be buried in, old prune.

Both Adele and Lana are comparable in looks . . .I don't see the big broohaha about their appearance.
      • Patricia 3 months ago
Apparently, as per Mr. Lagerfeld, Adele is a bit chubby. Therefore, as per Mr. Lagerfeld, Lana is much more attractive. It is interesting that nothing is as attractive as thin, no matter how one gets or stays that way.
